Destruction Island, and its now-abandoned lighthouse, lie offshore of Olympic National Park. Its silhouette, which only rises 80 feet above the sea, reminded me of the Civil War ironclad Merrimack which was eventually renamed the CSS Virginia.

Although the sky was overcast, it provided pleasing light and a muting of the harsh sun to capture this shot about an hour before sunset.

Because of the azimuth of the setting moon and the fact that there is a narrow field of view of Mt. Whitney (it's a bit recessed), there is only one time in the year when you might be able to record a moonset over Mt. Whitney at sunrise, and then only if the weather is cooperating. On this memorable occasion, it appeared that a hooded monk witnessed the event with me.

Electric Sunrise

The sun was rising above the Palouse and I was taking a sequence of 1.6-second shots with a 150mm lens recording its ascension. As luck would have it, these bolts of lightning made their appearance. Truly a memorable morning atop Steptoe Butte surrounded by thunderstorms and squall lines.

I am particularly fond of moonsets at sunrise and, in particular, of moonsets over Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States (the Lower 48). For a brief period of time, the light from the moon does not dominate the scene and its details can be captured in a single exposure.

The high school at Monument Valley, Arizona seems to have found a low-cost full-service maintenance program - a herd of goats and sheep are mowing (and presumably fertilizing) the football field. Now if they could only play football.

Ruby Beach

Ruby Beach is one of the real treats of the Olympic coast. It is easily accessed so draws a large number of people. Go early enough, however, and you're likely to have the beach to yourself.

Tannin-laden Cedar Creek created a fresh water lagoon in 2007, the year of this photograph, that created a brown reflection for the trees. The storms of winter, however, often change the geography of the land. What was once a still lagoon is now a raging channel.

Perhaps not the official name, but I hope that you can see why I've chosen it. This Alabama Hills arch is, perhaps, not well-known but it is always a pleasure to visit it. When the proper vantage point is chosen, the "right" claw appears to be a dolphin leaping from the water.

Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock may be found in SW Colorado near 4 Corners. The clouds really helped on this day.

Conditions and time-of-day were all unplanned. I was passing through the area on my way to Shiprock to shoot that famous landmark. I had never heard of this one but I'll take luck anyday.

Perhaps someone grew tired of walking and decided to cast their shoes into this rather remote tree. Others responded and now the tree is laden with scores of shoes.
