Johnny's Pier

On a recent trip to the beach I figured that I would dust of my camera and see if I still remembered how to push the button down on top of the thing. One day my son asked to tag along, now that he is eight he is old enough to start learning a thing or two about photography. So I put my camera on it's tripod and we headed out. As we were walking along discussing the finer points of the "rule of thirds" I stepped into a hole in the sand. As I lurched forward and my face sped for the sand reflexes took over and the camera, tripod and all, flew out of my hands. Quickly, my son ran past me and started to attend to my camera. Dusting the sand off he says "hey Dad, you really should watch were the heck you are going, you just broke your really expensive lens."

Lesson Learned.

These are not blackbirds, they are vultures. More specifically they are what I call Young Upwardly Mobile Suburbanite Scavengers (YUMSS), and their population has exploded. I have seen them circling over my head as I am cutting the grass on a hot summer day. I suppose they would eat me given the chance, but there is no shortage of food for them. Years ago man killed off the major predators of the area, the wolves and cougars. So, with the predators gone the deer population exploded. When man decided it was nice to live in the suburbs the automobile became the new predator at the top of the food chain. So the new food chain is: car hits deer, vulture eats deer, man takes car to mechanic to be repaired, mechanic gets money, mechanic buys new car, car hits deer....

"Deer crashes result in at least $1.1 billion a year in vehicle damage, says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety" -USA Today

In the Sun

bitzcelt posted a photo:

It was a unplanned spontaneous trip to the coast. Right before we were going to leave I said "wait! I forgot my camera and tripod." My wife gave me the "look." I knew better than to mix family time with photography time. The only reason I said it in the first place was to get the "look." I had no intention on bringing my good camera in the first place. Because I know that a "little bit carzy" four year old (her words, not mine) and serious photography do not mix well.

But I still had my phone. I don't know if you can consider this photography or just luck. The lag time between pressing the shutter release and the time of the pic was about two seconds. So I just kept pushing that button.

Special Thanks to KFC for giving us way more food than we could possibly eat so there was plenty of extra fries to feed the gulls.

On my recent trip to New Orleans I wanted to get some night shots of the street cars. To avoid the regular night time crazies I figured I would get up early and head downtown. I ended up running out of night before I could get the shot that I wanted. On the plus side, I did return with all of my camera gear.

I just got back from New Orleans. Even after five years the evidence of Hurricane Katrina was not hard to find. Empty lots where homes had once been, shuttered schools, and abandoned buildings were abundant. Even though the road ahead remains long, the city is very much alive.
This photo is from last years visit and is one of the many above ground cemeteries in New Orleans.

The sign says it all. As a matter of fact it is also the name of the bar. It is Bourbon Street in New Orleans and drinking on the streets is not only OK,(see pic below) it is encouraged. This guy does not work for the bar, he is just holding the sign. He is smiling because he just noticed me taking his picture. That means he can ask me to put some money in his bucket(which I did). He will work the sign until he makes enough for his own "Huge Ass Beer to GO" and then he is out of there. Someone else will pick up the sign, and so it goes all night long. I guess you could say that it is free advertising.

I know the pic is not all that good, I can blame it on a few too many "Huge Ass Beers".

I tell my wife all the time that she is lucky that I am into photography and not golf. When on vacation I can get my photography fix in and still be back before breakfast. Also, I don't even have to leave the house to get in some photography time. Just try teeing off with a one wood in your dining room and see what happens. Most importantly, I can use my camera on my kids. You certainly can't use a golf club on your kids. Yes, she sure is lucky that I am into photography and not golf.
