&lt;p&gt;From Stina's hike on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, reportedly one of the best day hikes in New Zealand.  This is the Emerald Lakes, seen on the descent from the high point above Red Crater. Some steam can be seen from a thermal area above the largest lake. There's more than one thermal vent right on the trail - reminders that this is an active volcano. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Some of this area was used for Mordor in the &lt;i&gt;Lord of the Rings&lt;/i&gt; trilogy.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
