I had no idea that irises were native to Croatia - this trip, though, they were blooming all over the hillsides. It's Croatia's national flower! And the blooms were as big as my head!

We stopped to see the Church of the Good Shepherd, a scenic spot on Lake Tekapo in the Mt. Cook region. The church is one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand.

We walked out onto the salt flats near Badwater at sunset, and it sure didn't look like much was going to happen in terms of color in the sky, and then suddenly, the horizon turned bright, intense red. It was one of the more amazing sunsets I've seen in a long time!

I thought the noise in this one (which I think is just stuff in the water) looked like a night sky. Somehow the idea of jellyfish out cruising around in the cosmos is just fun.

The interior of the Blue Mosque (Imperial Mosque of Sultan Ahmet I) in Istanbul.

We're in Turkey for Thanksgiving Break (what could be better than Turkey for Thanksgiving? :) and enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of Istanbul. Remarkable place. But so exhausting.

The hotel's internet service is very slow, so I haven't been able to upload photos or spend much time on Flickr. Hope to catch up next week.

Most of these irises (Iris missouriensis) are past their prime, but I did see a nice patch today on my walk with the dogs.

I went for a nature walk yesterday morning with the Genesee Valley Conservancy.

A local private landowner opens his land for guided nature walks with the group - there's a huge stand of forest with an understory filled with bluebells (Mertensia virginica). Quite an unbelievable sight!

FINALLY! A gorgeous, gorgeous day today! Blue skies and no rain! The weeping cherries have started blooming this week, so I saw lots of them on my walk today.

A striped squill (Puschkinia scilloides libanotica), native of Turkey but grown all over the world in gardens.

The blue in the background is the ever-present glory-of-the-snow.

I think we're running about a week behind this year in terms of the bloom, because it's been such a chilly spring.

manta ray

Bottom side of a manta ray (Manta birostris) from the Georgia Aquarium. Rays are one of my favorite animals!

In another area of the aquarium, they had a small pool where you could pet the rays - lots of fun to watch kids doing this.
