This is Peter. The Manitoba Sunflower Fest includes a quilt exhibit. Peter was one of the quilters at said exhibit. His quilt (Twelve Months of Eggmen - seen below) was made for his youngest son. He and his wife have three. He's made a quilt for his oldest and youngest sons and now will need to make one for his middle son.

He's been working on this quilt since January and has spent around 12 hours a day the past three weeks just madly trying to get all the handwork done (all the legs and arms etc. are hand-stitched).

His son is anxious to get it off the wall and on to his bed.

He is part of my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100Strangers.com

A fellow photographer friend and I are taking on a challenge for 2011. A word per week. A photograph per week. Open to our interpretation.
This week's word was "streetlight".

I get an idea in my head. I know time is limited due to lighting and the 5 year-old just keeps putting her head in front of the lens and the 2 year-old is having trouble listening... and he'd already fallen in the cold water so I didn't want to keep him out there too long. And so it goes. Never what I have in my brain. Such is life.

Week 1 of 52 weeks. The word is love.

My camera was actually away for cleaning and I just received it back last night. It's amazing how much I miss it when it's gone for not even a week.

These are my two munchkins. This is NOT the photograph I had planned but goodness were they not in a mood to cooperate. This was the best of the bunch. And, for all their shrieking and anger at each other they do still love each other... even if they don't love their mom enough to cooperate for a photo. ;-)

The town of Wasagaming in Riding Mountain National Park is familiar to me. It is happy, sunny days of my youth. It is youth retreats and camping. It is family gatherings and even the occasional day trips. I meet a teenage version of myself as I wander its streets.

But, what it is NOT for me is staying in a hotel or cabin or resort. We were not that kind of family. Not of that kind of leisure or of that kind of finances. That changed this summer. In amongst our days of camping during our week off my family and I treated ourselves to one night in a comfortable bed with a door that closed instead of zipped shut.

This is Deb, the proprietor of the establishment we stayed at: Clear Lake Lodge. She was a lovely woman, the perfect kind of hostess for a lodge. We had, in all actuality, left the lodge already but as in common for me for this project, I regretted not photographing her. And so we returned.

Deb has owned the Clear Lake Lodge for about 15 years. In fact, her daughter has grown up there. The lodge is open from May to Thanksgiving. And, in the spring and fall Deb has her dad come and help her out as well. Deb and her family spend the rest of their time in Brandon, a city about 60 miles from Wasagaming. In Deb's words: "Brandon is the real life, Riding Mountain is the good life."

She is part of my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100Strangers.com

Bill and Betty #33

Sunday, July 25th brought my family and myself to Altona for the Manitoba Sunflower Festival. Interestingly enough, part of the day involved a(nother) garden tour. And, partially because it would be a lovely time for our son to nap and partially because my daughter was not allowed on the Winnipeg tour (restricted to those over the age of 12) and partially because I so love flowers and peeking at people's gardens I decided to do this tour as well.

Most of the homeowners were not at home so we wandered their gardens without being able to ask them any questions or to meet them. And then there was Bill and Betty. Not only were they home but were amongst the sweetest people I have ever met.

Bill and Betty have lived in this home for just over 15 years. Prior to that they lived on a farm not too far from Altona. The tree seen below was transplanted from said farm. Normally the gardening is up to Betty but this year her knee was bothering her and Bill did a lot of it. In Betty's words: "I don't think he knew how much work it actually was".

Bill and Betty wandered through the gardens with people and then also proceeded to offer everyone coffee, iced tea and homemade cookies. And, when Abby (my 4 year-old daughter) came up on their deck Betty snuck inside for a special little treat for "the only little girl who has visited our gardens today": her very own ice cream sandwich.

Meet Kent and April. They were heading across the open space at the Winnipeg Folk Fest and April's pink sweater caught my eye. I stopped them and asked to take their photo and I was glad I did. Turns out that April actually farmed in Minnedosa for years. Well, when I mentioned that I actually grew up in Arden she clarified it: The Brookdale Road actually. I understand. I usually say I was raised in the Neepawa area until I discover they know the area well.

Kent and April have been married for 20 years. Once I found that out I had to get them to pose for this shot, they happily obliged. Just as my husband and I: Kent comes for one day, April for the entire weekend.
