Sherborne Portage Wetland

A wetland beside Sherborne Falls, along the portage from St. Nora Lake. I'm standing on a beaver dam that was strategically placed just downstream from the Falls. It was probably a good idea until spring thaw came.... the dam was ruptured some time ago with bits of it scattered all the way down to St. Nora Lake.

A waterfall that can be found along the St. Nora Lake / Sherborne Lake portage in Algonquin Highlands Frost Centre area. Only reference to a name I can find for this waterfall is "Sherborne Falls" from the Algonquin Highlands website. This was a great stop on the way out before the snow starts. I have quite a few decent photos from this spot.

Went camping in the Frost centre area by canoe this weekend. Due to the weather we cut it short by a day. Here is the first place on the way in that I dared to pull out the "good" camera - we paddled across St. Nora Lake and Sherborne Lake in heavy rain and a noticable wind. By the time we arrived here our gear was soaked. Still, I very much enjoyed the view of this little island from our campsite on Sherborne Lake.

Very difficult to choose a photo for today. I went on a 30km hike along the Sydenham section of the Bruce Trail, with my camera. By the time I was done I had about 350 photos on the memory card to sort through. This particular spot was before we arrived at Walter's Falls and we were starting to pick up the pace, having dawdled a bit taking photos for the first half of the hike. What I liked here, aside from the obvious lots of reaching branches for the wide angle is the juxtaposition of the new green moss against the drab still dead from winter landscape. I saw lots of white and yellow flowers along the hike as well. Spring is definitely here at this part of the trail.

An old cart decorates the grounds of Riverwood Conservacy in Mississauga. I like to wander the grounds with my camera from time to time and today I did just that with Kristen. This was a 30 second stop and grab a quick shot while I wandered about looking for signs of spring type photos. The main sign of spring I found here was the soaker I got from the meltwater :)

A view of Rattray Marsh, in Mississauga. The marsh water level is very low right now, which enabled me to walk right out onto the frozen mudflat without getting dirty or harming the marsh either. This is a night image, with Toronto's city lights in the background.

This is a scene played out last night in Mississauga. We were geocaching near the lake, and had great views of Toronto from the location. I asked fellow BFL cacher Baker's Dozen to sit on the concrete structure while I took a 30 second exposure with him backlit by the city lights. Baker's Dozen did a great job sitting still for it.

This little creature was quite interested in our winter campsite at Mew Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park. This photo is a little noisy as the light was near dusk. They reminded me of our cats back home!

An image taken while geocaching along the Speed River in Guelph, Ontario. The hike started out under cloudy skies, and at this point I'm about 4 kilometers from the car. What I saw was the clouds were breaking and the stars were just starting to peek through. I took a couple handheld photos at f/2.8 ISO 6400 and decided I liked what I saw but wanted a cleaner image, so I deployed the tripod here. I have a ridiculously light aluminum tripod that's just perfect for hiking, and enables me to grab images like this far from the car.

Winter Camping

This weekend, I spent a couple days trying out winter camping. I've been out as late as December before but never in actual snow and ice and such. I slept in this tent at Mew Lake campground. At one point I decided to toss a flashlight in there and grab a "night photo" with my tent onsite in the snow. I will definitely be going camping in the snow again.

A winter view of Sunday Creek in Algonquin Provincial Park. We snowshoed the Big Pines Trail and stopped along the way for some photos. I didn't want to get much closer than this, as I didn't want to end up in Sunday Creek itself.

Grassy plants poke out of the snow at the east end of lost lake as we snowshoed past them on a beautiful hike. We cheated and took the lake instead of the trail to skip a couple hills on our 23.5 km snowshoe hike.

Today was a fantastic day. I am having a difficult time choosing a photo for the day. Thanks to that big snowstorm, we had plenty of unbroken fresh snow everywhere in the landscape. I joined up with some geocaching friends and we snowshoed 23.5 kilometers through the wilderness along the Gibson River in search of geocaches. Of course, I brought the camera as there is nothing, simply nothing more fun to shoot than a forest after a snowstorm. Here the ice from the previous night's freezing fog / frost still clings to the trees as the morning sun climbs into the sky. This is about 2 kilometers from the car which is parked at the end of South Gibson Lake Road. I should point out I'm standing on a small lake to take this photo. I would say I got about 100 "keepers" for the day out of my photography efforts, which is a nice payback for carrying 11 pounds of camera and lenses over that distance.
