Today Ben was 24 years old. A week ago we planned this assault on Snowdon as his birthday treat - just father and son. We set off at 10.15am on the Pyg track, and on the way back finished the walk using the Miner's track - arriving back at the car at 3.05pm.

My 26 year old walking boots now need fixing as the sole of the right boot came 1/2 way unstuck 2/3rds of the way up. I managed to finish both the up and down despite this.

At the summit is this trig point. We persuaded a bloke to take this snap on my HTC Desire smartphone. In the process of doing this the guys bobble hat blew off - it was that windy!!!! You can see us here clinging on for dear life - I think the gusts were up to 50mph!

It was a fun day. Definitely a good way to celebrate with Ben as he's a great outdoors fan :)

Ben is currently working for E2E 25 hours a week on frontline (first level) support helping Royal Bank of Scotland sort their IT issues. Tomorrow he is in Sheffield with Natalie, his girlfriend, for her graduation (2:2 in Interior Design). Natalie has an interior design job and hopes her contract will be extended in January for a further term.

Next week Ben is on Leeds for a technical interview with a company that specialises in penetration testing of web apps and network pc's. Fingers crossed for him. He's got a few months left to complete a dissertation on his Masters qualification, and then he does need a full time job ideally as a penetration tester.

Day 6: Fri 25th Feb

Runs: 9.20am Down Jean – Marie up Melezes, up Bergerie, down to Colorado, down Pollux and across to lift Verdons Nord, down Le Bozelet – on the Champagny En Vanois side of Les Verdons, Bozelet is a road and then seriously steep drops – about 3 more a reddy black sort of steepness.

Stopped at the restaurant – on Bozelet - lovely veg soup, skied down to lift Borseliers, across to lift Rossa, down to lift Carella, to the top Roche de Mio (2700m), a short queue for the Bellecote pod which took us to Glacier de la Chuipe aross to Glacier, down to the Grotte Ice Cave, wandered around the cave, made a snow angel, up lift Traversee down La Combe a 7 foot wide road – on the left of this track was the softer snow, so I snow plowed down until it became a proper piste. down to the Bellecote pod mid station which took us back to Roche de Mio. Down blue run Le Vasset, down to lift Verdons Sud up to the clouds at the top of Les Verdons (2500m), down Les Verdons, arrived at Becoin for 17.10 (lift shuts at 17.20), last run of the holiday was Mont St Saveur. Back to the apartment. The whole route was queue free. Most people would go to the glacier via belle Plagne – but at 11.30am there would have been very long queues. My route was Q free.

Ben then said let's pack up now and drive overnight. So at 8.20pm we left and I drove down the mountain. We decided to go via Lyon on the autoroute all the way. Ben and I shared the driving, Julia stayed awake with whoever was driving. We arrived at Le sur de manche at 6.16am, the gate through opened at 7am, we were first in the train. I tried to change lanes and grounded the car on the concrete hump doing some damage to both doors. Set off at 7.16am. Ben drove us to Thurrock MacDonald's – had the big breakfast – last day off diet! I drove the rest of the way home – we got here, Long Eaton, at 10.45am. So we had gained an extra day. I would definitely do it again – or we could have 1 day more skiing and leave sat night?

I caught up on some TV as I was not that tired.

Sunday – up at 8am. Watched some more TV – The Biggest Loser, and Master Chef. Had cooked breakfast.
