A trip to the Railrod Museum of Pennsylvania...

In the back yard, they have a fenced in area where they keep the really old and rusted out trains. They're in the open and rusting out even more in the elements.

You can barely make out the text on the side of this rusty and crusty baggage car but it says:

A trip to the Railrod Museum of Pennsylvania...

In the back yard, they have a fenced in area where they keep the really old and rusted out trains. They're in the open and rusting out even more in the elements.

Just my kind of place! I was out there in the freezing cold for hours!

Magic Bus

So I noticed these great rusty buses that seemed abandoned in some high brush right behind Billy Tire Center (the new one) on Highway 80 in Alabama and there's some guys outside the garage hanging around. I saunter over and ask them if they mind if I photograph the buses.

I get a weird look like "those rustbuckets?" and then a nice southern ""Sure darlin', go ahead...."

Never hurts to ask. And what a great find - you could still read the "Louisville Transportation" on the side.

One of the large machines at Sloss is called a pig caster - a conveyor belt made up of shallow molds linked together. Ladle cars full of molten iron used to be pulled up the caster and then tilted out at the top. The molds were sprayed with water to cool the iron. All the water ran down into this dark tunnel at the bottom of the caster.

Raw materials from the furnace such as iron ore, limestone and coke, came in by railroad car to the elevated stock trestle. Doors on the bottoms of the cars dumped the materials into bins below. Another railroad car ran in a tunnel below the bins (you can see it at the back), and transferred materials from the bins to the Skip Hoist.

The extremely large railroad car bin that used to run under the stock trestle and transfer the raw materials - iron ore, limestone, coke - to the Skip Hoist. I'm guessing it would fill from the top, move along the tracks to the hoist, then dump it's contents by tipping over.
