Sculpted by Graeme Mitcheson and unveiled in October 2012, this impressive bit of rock commemorates the long history of quarrying in the area. It stands at the top of Broad Hill, which is an old quarry, now a new footpath with fine views around Leicestershire.

You can read the sculptor's thoughts on making this monument here.

The Leicestershire Round passes very near and it's well worth making the (very short) detour around the new footpath.

Listed Grade II in 2012. Despite what almost every news report said this was built in the 1970s, on a design from the 1960s. It's recently had it's colours changed as it went from ESSO to BP.

Although you pass the Birstall sign going up the A6 to get here, the Leicester city boundary actually runs along this side of the A6, up to the end of the allotments which lie behind this building. Everything to the west of the road is in Leicester, including this petrol station.

The end of the road for another quality butchers. They did really good homemade steal pies, lovely handcut bacon and a variety of other fine meat products.

Big crowd of enthusiasts at North Leicester station (and all along the track back to Loughborough), waiting for the the restored King Edward II engine to 'do a turn'. You can probably see some of the photos they took here.

Locally listed, derelict water mill. This is the view of it from the public footpath that runs down to stream, which presumably once powered it. Love that chimney stack. Not strictly on the Leicestershire Round but very close to it and worth a small detour.
