This is the great staircase of the Pergamon Altar in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. You would have gone up the stairs and entered a central courtyard to get to the altar. Now you go up the stairs into a room where the frieze that surrounded this courtyard is displayed. The frieze that decorated the four sides of the outside, showing the battle between the gods and the giants, is displayed around the main room containing the altar.

I loved the Pergamon Museum - and no, not just because of the Pergamon Altar and the Miletus Gate (and the Ishtar Gate and triumphal way in the Islamic Art wing). But you get a free audio tour, which is a really good, 'cos, honestly, while these big chunks of ancient architecture are impressive, they're far more interesting when you know a bit about them.

This is a courtyard off the street in Krakow's old Jewish district. Avid film buffs may recognise it from the film, Schindler's List, it features in one of the clearing the ghetto scenes.

The entrance hall of the Natural History Museum in London.
It'd been a long time since I'd been to the museum - at least 15 years I suspect - and I'd either forgotten or never noticed the marvellous architecture of the building, especially the entrance hall with its arches, stairs and galleries. It's also possible that they've cleaned the windows, allowing more light to enter and making the awesomeness more noticeable! I love the way the different elements work together - the horizontal and vertical lines, and the arches - to create the the sense of space and grandeur inside the building.
Anyway, we went in on Saturday to have a look at the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition (some great stuff, btw; go have a look if you're in London) and I was immediately struck by the building. So after the exhibition I wandered off round the gallery of this hall taking photos whilst my mother sat on a bench and got hungry...

I'm finally re-processing the photos I took in Bulgaria last summer, after accidentally deleting them a little over a year ago. No really, I am that dim sometimes. I was *attempting* to back them up, and just assumed I was hitting enter to say, 'yes, I do want to move this folder to this location' as opposed to hitting enter to say, 'yes, I know this folder is too big for the recycle bin so just delete it all NOW.'

DUMBASS.

Fortunately for my sanity I had (a) already created, uploaded and ordered my photobook from the trip (yay for blurb, etc, plug plug plug), and (b) not yet deleted most of the photos off the memory cards 'cos, amazingly, I hadn't *been* anywhere for a couple of months. So I lost any photos from the first week (that weren't already on flickr) up to half way through the wedding - but I had the RAW files of the rest. And I've been putting off re-editing them ever since.
