In good company! Gresley A4 pacific 60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower lines up with world speed record holder, ex-60022, Mallard in LNER Garter Blue as 4468 around the turntable at the NRM.

Late Sunday afternoon is a good time to visit the museum as it was virtually empty so no problems getting clear shots of the exhibits.

The main reason for my visit to the National Railway Museum was to see Gresley A4 pacific 60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower for the first time since its temporary repatriation to the UK from the USA. Not that I knowingly saw it before it was shipped over there in the early 1960s although if my circa 1959 Ian Allan Eastern Region ABC had survived maybe I would know.

I overheard another visitor comment that the engine must be from the 1950s because it was named after the US president of that time. The actual reason why the engine, originally named Golden Shuttle, was renamed Dwight D. Eisenhower by the LNER in 1946 was because of the then general's leadership as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe in WWII.

Bodmin & Wenford Cornwall September 2006

A brief glimpse from the footplate of Great Western 2-8-0T freight engine 4247 climbing up the hill from Bodmin Road to Bodmin.

After the out and back journey to Boscarne Junction from Bodmin General station I was offered a footplate ride to Bodmin Parkway & back on this loco. The run to Parkway is virtually all downhill but the return was impressive as the gradients are between 1 in 37 & 1 in 40 straight off the end of the platform. The freight engine handled the 4 coach train with no problems but was working hard all the way. Brilliant. A much more dramatic journey than one on the cushions. Thanks Will the driver, Bill, the fireman & Brian, the trainee fireman.

In 2006 to commemorate 40 years since the closure of the the Great Central line as a through route the modern-day GCR brought Southern Merchant Navy 4-6-2 35005 Canadian Pacific to the railway and temporarily renumbered her 35030 Elder-Dempster Lines.
The clean lines , some say spartan, of the backhead and cab of Great Western 2884 Class 2-8-0 3850 as it stood at the head of its train in Minehead station.

3850 is owned by the Dinmore Manor Locomotive Ltd and based on the West Somerset. The following information is from their website www.dinmoremanor.co.uk/index.html .

3850 was one of the last batch of the 2884 class of GWR 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotives, introduced in 1938, which were an later version of the 2800 class originally introduced in 1902 to the design of George Churchward. Built at Swindon on 16 June 1942 it was first allocated to St. Philip's Marsh, Bristol. From there it went to Westbury in March 1947 and onto Severn Tunnel Junction twelve months later. In 1958 3850 was put into store, but returned to service with a move to Aberdare in February 1959 from where it worked until 1963. The locomotive then went to Banbury before being transferred to Oswestry in October 1964 and then to Croes Newydd in January 1965 from where it was withdrawn by British Railways later in the year.

It had the good fortune to be dispatched to Woodham's in Barry and was purchased for preservation in 1984. After many years of dedication it steamed again in February 2006.

If the backhead is considered spartan then the rear view from Great Western 2884 Class 2-8-0 3850 is even more uncluttered. This is great for sighting signals, etc on a warm summer's day such as this but mid-winter tender-first running sorts the men from the boys!

This is a pretty impressive looking supermarket. Look closer and its railway origins become clearer. In fact it was Newcastle station on the County Down Railway which ran from Belfast south to this terminus.

The station was opened on 25 March 1869, although this building actually dates from 1905 when it was remodelled to accommodate the Great Northern Railway's line from Banbridge. and closed to passengers in 1955, by which time it had been taken over by the Ulster Transport Authority.
