Winter Panorama - Kromme Rijn, Amelisweerd, Rhijnauwen, Utrecht

REPOST - just to encourage Winter to stop messing about and get crackin' !!

And this is how we did a 6483 x 4734 shot back in 2009, long before the D800 was concieved ;-)
(ok, this is just above 30 megapixels, but close enough...)

Stitched Panorama

Beautiful winter landscape, along the river "Kromme Rijn". Everything is white due to "frozen mist" (aka frost) (it hadn't even snowed here). Actually quite a bit of hassle, since I forgot to shoot about 10% of the topleft corner of the panorama :-( Had to reconstruct it in Photoshop - didn't want to crop it too much, because I would have lost the nice trees in the topright corner...

Feb 2010: Thanks for all the kind comments & favs. Only downside of having taken this picture, is that I doubt if the this scenery will ever look this great again... Which stops me from revisiting it :-)

Here's one more from that really foggy day. This is looking from the Sarphatistraat towards the Torontobrug.

I think this is another example that illustraties why "crop' really is the first, and possible most important step in post-processing.

PS: Btw, what bugs me is that you don't have control over the icon that Flickr generates (the icon for this photo is off-centre, but I don't want to change the crop of the photo just for that ... )

We managed to ignore autumn and pretend it was still summer until mid-October, all-in-all it was such a lovely post-summer (dare I call it "Indian Summer"?) in Utrecht this year! But in spite of the sunshine, today it felt bitterly, bitterly cold for the first time....Winter is definitely coming!

Technicalities: D700 doing what it does best: low light shots. Using mode M: Lock exposure, aperture, ISO (@2000), in short: turn off ALL the "intelligence" in the camera. Take deep breath, firmly plant your feet and shoot a burst at 1/10s. Exhale, pick the sharpest from the series, ignore the rest.

Misty Morning in Amsterdam

This was taken where Amstel river meets the Herengracht canal (this bridge is next to the Hermitage)

I have to say this is a lucky shot, for two reasons:

First, as usual when people are moving, I took a continuous series of shots and this one happened to just be so nicely symmetrical.

Second, at home I only noticed this composition because I happened to be using an extreme zoom in Lightroom to check sharpness (the original image is much wider, it covers the whole bridge and then some), so this crop suggested itself to me ;)

I have to say that playing around with zoom in LR is a great way to figure out the best crop, I do it a lot, but in this case it was an "accident".

Downside is, taken at 72mm but cropped to like 300mm equivalent, there's not a lot of resolution left on the D700. This sure is a case where the extreme resolution of the D800 would have been nice!

About the band: DelMontis is een muzikaal verbond tussen zanger/pianist Frank Montis (o.a. Laura Vane & The Vipertones) en saxofonist/arrangeur Rolf Delfos (o.a. The Houdini’s). Beide heren leerden elkaar kennen via samenwerking in de Nu-Jazz formatie The Jazzinvaders en al snel ontstonden de plannen voor DelMontis. Aangevuld tot een sextet met klasse musici van allerlei pluimage ontstond er een mix van de songs van Montis en de horns van Delfos waarbij alles draait om een uitgebalanceerde combinatie van vette grooves, transparante liedjes en muzikale vrijheid.

View from the conclusion flat (right next to the FC Utrecht stadium).. Amazing how many trees there are in this view... Looks like the centre of the city is in the middle of a forest... ;-)
