Copper Kettle Apple Butter - A Family Affair

mommylolly posted a photo:

Every Year we make and sell Apple Butter to support the 1889 one room school house that we maintain (preserve) and open for tours. Over Labor Day Weekend at the 64th Annual Homecoming picnic, we "turned" a kettle. We started with 16 gallons of homemade apple sauce (my mom and I made that) and started the fire under my great great aunts copper kettle at 8 am. When my uncles would let them, the rest of the family took turns stirring until 2:30. They are very protective of the kettle and the process. If you are not careful, the apple butter burns easily, especially after the sugar is added. After much debate - the apple butter was deemed ready and I was promoted. For years each of my 3 uncles have been instructing me in the art of apple butter making. Each one of them has their own preference for when a kettle of apple butter is ready. Since they never agree, they have decided that after almost 20 years of tutoring, it is now my call to determine when it should come off.

We have an assembly line method of getting the apple butter out of the kettle and into the jars. It has to be done fast so the jars will seal without additional processing. My mom scoops and pours into jars that my son hands to her with funnels in place. I take the jars, wipe the rims and put the lids on. My husband and future son in law tighten the lids. My aunt wipes the jars off and my daughter boxes them. Oh and my daughter's best friend keep the jars and lids within easy reach. Once the jars cool and seal, they are washed and labels are applied. We never got to that point because we sold all 63 jars that came out this kettle to the visitors to the old school with the exception of the one pictured and that was only because it was not quite full enough and I had hid it under the table. Sneaky, but I really wanted some to have with my toast. Now we have to do this all over again to fill all of the requests we have and then again for ourselves.

Buster B.
Son of A.S & L. Vadie Hewitt
Born April 13, 1906
Died Aug. 4, 1925

Buster would not let me take his photo at first. Everytime, I tried to snap his picture, my camera would read funky colors and say Unable to Focus - Not focus to close or focus too far like normal.- I turned and took shots of the next tombstone without a problem. I backed up and tried Buster again. No go. My camera would not work from any angle or on any setting when I tried to take his picture. Buster and I had a little conversation. I explained that I meant no harm and that I have been documenting placement in the area cemetaries of relatives for genalogical records. And taking pictures of intersting headstones. I told him that I admired his photo. I was still unable to take a picture of him from any angle. I promised Buster that I would put a picture of his headstone along with the inscription on flickr for all to see. I was then able to focus and took several different photos of Buster. His Birthday is coming up in a few days and I think he is lonely and feeling neglected. My close up of his photo is to bright and will have to be taken over again in the daylight. I am going to try to return to the cemetary on his 99th birthday (this Sat) and see if he will allow me to take his picture again with a close up so you all can see how handsome he was.

Is it a lightening bug or is it the same glowing red balls of light that My GR. GR. Grandmother and her sisters used to watch playing as documented in their journals and personal letters. This Obelisk marks the graves of a father and son John Sutton, son of JNO & Ann Born in England Died 1825 Aged 85 years and John D. Sutton, son of JNO & Catherine Born in England Died 1838, Aged 66 years Founder of the Town of Sutton.

John and John D.are my grandmother's grandfather and father and my GR. GR. Gr and my GR. GR. GR. GR. Grandfathers

You can dismiss this as a bug, ground lightening, or a camera malfunction (as I first did) but might change your mind once you look at the next photo.

Monument above the graves of John Sutton 1740 to 1825 and his son John D. Sutton 1772 to 1838. John D. Sutton is the Founder of the twon of Sutton the County Seat of Braxton County West Virginia. These gentlemen are my Great (4x and 5x) grandfathers. I wonder if the illumination of the stones is a trick of sunlight (it was clear outside but overcast and had drizzled earlier in the day) or an indiciation of paranormal activity? The other photo of this has streaking balls of light, just like John D.'s daughters used to see according to family legend and papers.

Taken at the Skidmore Cemetary. The person with me took a photograph of this view seconds before I did and she has no mist. The next photo I took a moment later was also clear. There is also a red light in the upper right corner. The sun had set to the left and it was an overcast day.
