Yellow-rumped Warbler

Fountain, Colorado - Another tiny bird that migrates through our area each spring, this warbler seems to be more numerous and a bit easier to spot than the all yellow one I posted yesterday. Their name is derived from the yellow patch on the top of their "rump" that is not visible in this profile view. It can be seen showing between their folded wings if viewed from behind. The nick name for them that I prefer is "butter butt".

Bald Eagle

Big Johnson Reservoir, Colorado Springs, CO - Perched high up in the tree tops, this Bald Eagle had just finished feeding its eaglets and was watching over the nest with concern as a Red-tailed Hawk flew over the area. I was lucky enough to get a few shots before Spring finished covering the tree canopy with leaves.

Wigeon Power

Colorado Springs, CO - Here is yet another look at one of my favorite birds, the American Wigeon. These comical year round residents sound like squeaky toys but I especially like their powerful looking poses as they flap their wings, which is in such sharp contrast to their meek demeanor.

Colorado Springs, CO - These Canada Geese goslings were just two days old when this was taken. Mom and Dad where not afraid of me as their new family of four walked right in front of me on their way back to the water. They even stopped to examine me and my camera.

Returning to the nest

Colorado Springs, CO - This bald eagle has a nest with at least three eaglets and I guess fish are not always the easiest source of food for this hungry family. The feathers were flying when this meal (American Wigeon) was delivered to the nest which won't even be visible much longer as the leaves begin to grow out. Mom and Dad really knew how to get privacy when they built their nest as it is impossible to get a clear view even without any leaves on the trees.

Colorado Springs, CO - This Northern Rough-winged Swallow is closing in on something floating in the water. It amazes me that they can examine and scoop up these tiny things from the water's surface while flying at extreme rates of speed. Our photos showed all sorts of different bugs being caught, as well as some not-so-tasty rejects (below).

Big Johnson Reservoir, Fountain, CO - Every time I've ever seen pronghorn, they seem to spook (as with the previous post below) as soon as they see people paying attention to them. But this last time, there were three females lying down without a care in the world. They didn't seem to mind me as I took their picture and one was even kind enough to look toward my camera for this shot. I didn't see any males but perhaps I now have a good place to go looking for them ...

Colorado Springs, CO - We returned for one more look at the owlets right about dusk and were not disappointed. This little one had ventured out onto a branch to get a better look at all of the funny people staring his way. Perhaps this owl was amused by those who chose to stand in the road to gain a closer look but the Colorado Springs Police Department was not as the reward for such behavior turned out to be traffic citations ...
