'The club was founded as the Selangor Club in 1884 as a meeting point for educated and high-ranking members of British colonial society. Nevertheless, membership to the club is primarily determined by high educational and social standards, rather than race or citizenship. The organisation was initially based in a small wooden building with an attap roof near the north eastern corner of the padang, which was replaced by a two-storey structure in 1890 on the west side of the padang, the present site of the club, and designed by AC Norman, a Government Architect. The building was later redesigned by architect Arthur Benison Hubback (who was notably credited for the design of the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station) and rebuilt in 1910, with two additional wings on either side of the main building and a Mock Tudor styling.

The club was nicknamed "The Spotted Dog" as two Dalmatians belonging to the wife of one of the club founders were left to guard the entrance of the club whenever they visited the club. The club is also simply referred to as "The Dog".

Over the years, the club's membership increased and had also begun to include high-ranking Malaysian civil servants: judges, lawyers and important people in society. The club's proximity to the old High Courts at the other side of Dataran Merdeka has also made the club a suitable meeting place for the legal fraternity. ...'
The location is now Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka).

The public information plaque at Merdeka Square reads thus:

'It was here that the Malaysian flag was raised for the very first time at 12.01 on 31st August 1957 to replace the Union Jack, thus signifying the end of British rule over Malaya and the end of colonisation. It is also here that Malaysians regardless of belief, throng in the thousands, on the eve of 31st August every year to usher in yet another year of independence. The Merdeka Square is also the venue of many Independence Day Celebrations and parades, The 95-meter flagpole at the end of the square is amongst the tallest in the world.
The strategic site and exclusive location resembled the atmosphere and environment of their homeland, The field was a popular venue for social activities and occasionally used for the game of cricket.

geoff-inOz posted a photo:

Built: 1897

It is said that the fountain was commissioned and brought from England by the Sanitary Board and assembled locally in 1897. Originally, it was to be located in the Market Square. However, the police objected to the location arguing that it would obstruct the flow of the traffic. Hence, an alternative site was found on the Selangor Club Padang. In more recent times the fountain has undergone restoration work and lost some of its ornamentation.

*Some online sources refer to the fountain as the Queen Victoria Fountain or simply Victoria Fountain. However, the book ‘Malaya - 500 Early Postcards’ by Cheah Jin Seng, refers to it as the ‘Cops Fountain’ and states that it was built in 1897 in memory of Steve Harper, an inspector from the Selangor Military Police.

The former premises of PH Hendry Jewellers...

A fine example of a classical style shophouse facade; interesting architectural features include large fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals, triangular pediment with a star and crescent motif (Islamic influence), additional gable on the roof behind the triangular pediment, and one bay window on the first floor with a Venetian window above.

Unfortunately, the facade is all that remains of the former premises of PH Hendry Jewellers (Est 1857*), appointed Royal Jeweller to the states of Negeri Sembilan, Selangor and Kelantan. The business moved to these premises sometime after 1920. In the early years the craftsmen and stones were brought from Ceylon but in later years the jewellery was designed by local artisans in an upstairs workshop.

From 1954, the Hendry family also operated a bakery from these premises, situated at the rear of the building. The bakery mainly catered for the needs of family and friends but would also serve walk-in customers.
