Training for the Solstice Presidential traverse this week we went up Monadnock 3 times in one day. This was on the way down after the third summit, each time going down and back up a different trail. The total distance was 10.5mi which we did in 8 hours which apparently bodes well for the traverse which will be 13 or 14 hours.

I have started training with a couple of colleagues to do a strenuous (and apparently traditional) hike of all the presidential ranges in the White Mountains on the Solstice. The training involves a hike each week over a longer and longer distance and culminating in this one which starts at 4am and ends whenever it ends…..

Today we did an 8mile round trip hike up Mondadnock, the most hiked mountain in America (apparently). The trail was the Pumpelly trail which is the longest to the summit.

The renovated building that was used for the horror movie Session 9. Said to be the inspiration of Arkham Sanatorium in one of HP Lovecraft's short story which in turn was the inspiration for Arkham Asylum in Batman.

We visited some of the Salem locations today with Flickr friedn, Cynmat and family. This site was also the estate of the Salem Witch Trial Judge, John Hathorne.

This cairn is a labor of love for a hiker who we have met several times on our hikes up Monadnock. He has spent most of the past summer building it up. It now really looks compact and beautiful. I think he hikes there every day. It was cold up there today.

I have been a little remiss in my nature photographer since buying the large 400mm prime (which stoked the urge to photograph sport instead).

This weekend I went to Plum Island and Salisbury beach - two premier birding destinations in Massachusetts and joined a cluster of photographers and birders who all had their lenses trained on these pine trees in the Salisbury beach campground. After a few minutes it became plain to me that they were after Crossbills - there were two varieties there: the white-winged and the red, but all I could see were these little green birds.

Of course these are Red Crossbills (can't you tell?) The females are this green color.

Seacoast, NH came down to Hamilton to play Ipswich today. The game was an intense one and Seacoast ended up winning 3-2 at the Iron Rail Fields. This is the Over The Hill Soccer League Over 30 Division 1.

It looks like elaborate lens flare, but this was in the sky yesterday as I was photographing children's soccer in Swampscott. We counted about 5 rainbows and the sundog (bright light to the left or right of the sun). All this from refraction in the ice in the clouds.

I went to see a long time hero of ours from back in the day in South Africa. You may have heard of the movie that was made about him recently called "Searching for Sugarman".

What a great story. What a great evening watching him live in a small venue in Boston.
