The Blue Chip City

Two weekends ago I made my way out to Cincinnati. My wife and I then crossed the Roebling Bridge into Covington, Kentucky to get the best view of the Cincinnati skyline. Hands down one of the best displays of pinks and oranges I've ever seen across a skyline.

Spring Green

I took a stroll through Messenger Woods in Homer Glen, Illinois to see what Spring has brought me this year. The forest was popping with wildlife. It was like a Disney movie. Deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and birds all came up and greeted me. None of that happened, but I did see all of those characters roaming the woods.

Also, does anyone have a suggestion on a semi-cheap computer monitor that displays true colors? I have both LCD and LED back-lit and I hate them both because they display unevenly between the two...

Longs Peak, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. This 14,259 foot behemoth is not the tallest peak in Colorado. On our last day in Colorado I woke up with the birds and made my way out to this open field to shoot the morning colors strewn across the skyline of the Rockies. Some day I hope to see this in the Dentists Office with a motivational quote below it.

I took a ride down to Cincinnati this weekend to drink. Yeah, a four and half hour trip to drink is a bit ridiculous, but I was able to spend the evening in Covington, Kentucky capturing the Cincinnati skyline so it was worth it.

Further down this street is where Batman and the Chief laid out the Joker in The Dark Knight. It's always been an iconic street, but more so now because of that scene. At the end of this canyon lies the Chicago Board of Trade. Word.

This is the sediment left from Furnace Creek Lake over 5 million years ago at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park. I feel as if this is an abstract more than a landscape. You be the judge.

I made my way up to the Skydeck at Willis (Sears) Tower over the weekend. Glass was semi-dirty in most spots so I figured clarity might be a bit off, but this shot seemed fairly decent in terms of sharpness. I think I like the Hancock Observatory better.

I got the chance to visit Mesa Verde National Park in Southwest Colorado during our last trip out West. It was a spur of the moment, hell, we have time to spare kind of trip. This is Spruce Tree. It is the third largest cliff dwelling by the Puebolan Peoples around AD 1211 - 1278. Pretty Impressive.

I took a stroll through Isle A La Cache in Romeoville last night in search of something inspiring. I've driven past this spot plenty of times, but the most scenic spot is on a bridge with absolutely no shoulder to sit on. Bummer. So, with that out of the picture I walked down this path and found this open path to the Des Plaines River.

Last night I went up to Saganashkee Slough in Palos Hills, Cook County to shoot around. I got lucky with this sunset as you can see. I felt like it was the ring of Sauron because I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Anyways, this is a long exposure taken with my 10 Stop ND filter.

My wife asked me what I wanted to do on my birthday so I told her I wanted to go shooting. After she treated me to some delicious Greek food we made our way down towards Adler to shoot around for a bit. I came across these tulips near the Shedd that I thought would make a great foreground feature. Anyways, it was beautiful out last night so I made the best of it. These tulips are dedicated to those who fought, continues to fight, or is celebrating survival from cancer. Fuck Cancer.

Fog Fountain

On Sunday night I met up with Matt Frankel over at Buckingham Fountain. Our original plan was to shoot at Adler because it is easily accessible and offers a decent view. However; a thick marine layer of fog stormed through the lakefront leaving the skyline in the clouds. So, we moved over to Buckingham where the skyline was still visible for a few minutes.

I go to grab my camera out of my bag, and voila! It's not in there because I forgot to put it back in after uploading photos the night before... So, Matt Frankel was generous enough to allow me the privilege of using his Nikon D600. Thanks Matt. Also, I'm a stupid head.

I've only managed to get out to my favorite suburban lake twice this Spring, and both times really kind of sucked. The lighting was good for only a few minutes both times, and the winter brought in no unique foreground toys for me to shoot like it did last Spring. Kind of bummer. But hey, at least it's Monday.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Woke up early on our last day in Colorado to shoot sunrise in Moraine Park, and after we achieved that we headed over to this spot which I'm not all to familiar with name-wise. Anyways, the wife was too cold to shoot so she left her camera with my fish-eye out and I snagged a few shots while simultaneously shooting with mine as well.

Man Enters the Cosmos

This was taken at the Adler Planetarium. This piece is called, “Man Enters the Cosmos.”

This sculpture is made with cast bronze by Henry Moore. Wikipedia defines this sculpture as a functional bowstring equatorial sundial. It was created in 1980 and stands 13 feet tall. This is a copy of a composition that Henry Moore created in the 1960′s for the offices of The Times newspaper in London. Moore has four other pieces of work throughout Chicago. This one is my favorite from Moore.
