While exploring Dali, I was drawn back to this watch tower over and over again. The town is full of ancient architecture and buildings but I always found myself wanting to shoot this one. This watch tower was immediately outside my hotel and guards the south gate.

Tunnel to the Temple, Dali, Yunnan Province, China

The only way to get through the walls and in to the ancient city of Dali is through one of four tunnels at either gate. I expect this made it difficult to conquer. This shot is of the south gate tunnel. The tunnel almost points you towards the temple pagoda that sits in the centre of old town.

The Pheonix, Dali, Yunnan Province, China

I have no Idea why there was a golden pheonix statue sat outside of the old town of Dali. With the backdrop of the Cangshan mountains it stood out nicely.

Silver Lining, Dali, Yunnan Province, China

They say every cloud has a silver lining. In the case of this storm, it was gold. The storm was brewing in the town of Dali while I was shooting and I nearly finished early fearing torrential rain. Behind the Cangshan mountains the setting sun peaked below the cloud layer and it lit up gold.

I was actually running for cover just before I took this photo. As I ran to escape the impending downpour, I glanced over my shoulder to see a break in the cloud and some awesome light occur. Like a photo ninja, I quickly set my tripod and fired off some frames. Seconds after I did, the light was gone.

A view of the north gate of Dali from outside the city at night. Dali has well preserved Imperial Chinese architecture all through the city and is an amazing place to visit!
