Since the opposition party can't paint their colors on any of the public buildings, they paint on the many abandoned buildings in Torola, and on their own houses. They also have their flags up all over town.

Day 70 - Headquarters

Today Melinda and I went to the Peace Corps office to get some work done (including turning in the scholarship applications for the girls I talked about on Day 69 and in my recent blog entry).

The office is located in an upper-class neighborhood, occupying a compound that was originally built to house four families. It is technically considered part of the embassy, so security is pretty tight. IDs are checked on the way in, and all vehicles are inspected.

I snapped this picture shortly after arriving in Arambala today. Melinda and her students have been working on the mural for a couple of weeks now. Carmen, a local artist, came up with the layout based on suggestions from the kids. The more talented kids are doing the complicated parts, and the rest are filling in trees, flowers, and animals. It should be done in another couple of weeks.
