In Defense of Mosquitoes

One more shot from our annual conference before I go on. This "mosquito" took the microphone to speak for the "African Mosquito Defense Fund."

United Methoidist churches in eastern PA have been funding a program called "Imagine No Malaria." The program has been providing mosquito netting to protect children from mosquitoes as they sleep. They're working with local authorities to assure the proper distribution of the nets. They're also studying the scents that attract mosquitoes to humans and developing baits that will lure them away from people in villages. They're educating people who simply assume that some of their family members will die of malaria. No, those deaths are preventable!

This mosquito rose to present an alternative. His friends and colleagues in Africa are being discriminated against. You can donate to Imagine No Malaria, he said. But, consider a generous donation to protect these poor, endangered insects.

Of course, his speeches were satirical. But, I thought his costume and his humorous approach were realy effective.

I'm pretty luke-warm about textures, but I played with several on this photo. Then I said, "Nah!" The large globe, situated in the warehouse district where we attended our annual conference, deserves the opportunity to stand for itself.

I chose the continent of Australia because it didn't have any steel supports jutting from its surface!

For the past few days, I've been carrying a point-and-shoot in my pocket. It was simply more practical as I attended the "annual conference" of the churches in eastern Pennsylvania.

My little Kodak mini and I saw some interesting things, including the simple, but eye-catching way they'd set up the altar on the platform. I took this photo to share with my congregation -- and others!

On my photostream, I have several labyrinths. They are placed indoors or outdoors, for the purpose of spiritual reflection and prayer.

This one was laid out on the floor of the convention hall where we are experiencing annual conference this week. It's printed on canvas! Participants are invited to take off their shoes, and if desired, to wear soft foot covers that are provided.

I'm not sure about this pair. They may have been faculty or staff of the college. Their faces do not reflect the quality of the music, but probably the storyline in the lyrics.

A Metaphor for Courage

According to the sign on the gallery wally, Yarrington sees "The Leap" as a metaphor for courage." Specifically, the type of courage required to leap into the unknown toward a vision of what might be. Courage like that, the artist believes, has brought about humankind's greatest achievements.

Artist, Jo Yarrington, has made an interesting creation with transparent images, mounted on floor stands. On a sunny day, daylight coming through the window brightens the images and projects forms, colors, and light onto the gallery's tile floor.

I always find great blue herons a challenge to photograph because they are so shy. Friends tell me that the trick is to find them near a rich food source; they're less apt to flee the camera if there are fresh fish around!

Yesterday, I crept up on one by noticing where it landed, as I watched it from a bridge. I was able to sneak around it.

A guy that Janice and I encountered as we were walking in a park. He said he's still learning to ride the unicycle, but he seemed to be pretty good at it! He also said that riding it gives him a good work-out.
