Known but to God

tricherson posted a photo:

The grave of an unknown soldier at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, France. View Large on Black

I took this photo while on a tour with some amazing students in 2005. The cemetery is on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach, and we were lucky in many ways on this visit--myself in particular. The stop was not included in our original itinerary, but our tour guide was incredulous that the company could leave this stop off of a tour for Americans.

In order to squeeze this unplanned stop into our itinerary, we had to leave very early, and as such, we were the first tour bus to arrive. We had the cemetery and the beach to ourselves, which was an incredible experience. The silence and solitude lent themselves to taking in the solemnity of this monument and reflecting on the events, the lives lost, and ultimately, due to the brave men who sacrificed their own lives, the lives and freedoms that were saved.

I could not have been more proud of my students. Our wonderful tour guide had shown The Longest Day on the tour bus, and while it was difficult for them to stay awake during the movie, especially with the rocking motion of the bus, I made sure they were all awake to watch the final scenes of the soldiers storming the beach. They arrived at Omaha Beach, fully aware of the importance of the sand they were standing on. While other kids with our tour ran around as if they were vacationing in Florida, these remarkable teenagers sat, reflected, and spoke with unbelievable reverence about the events that took place, the blood shed, the lives lost, and the sacrifices made. I am forever grateful to them for making this visit all the more memorable and touching.

University of Arizona
Tucson, Arizona, USA

Sculpted by Susan Gamble, the USS Arizona Memorial on the campus of the University of Arizona consists of 1,511 dog tags--one for each of the sailors who were on board the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941 when it went down at Pearl Harbor. Each of the 1,511 tags is imprinted with one of the names of the sailors serving aboard the USS Arizona. The effect is sobering.

The complete sculpture resembles an 18-foot ship's mast with US and Arizona flags. The stenciled text that encompasses the tile work thanks those who lost their lives.

University of Arizona
Tucson, Arizona, USA

Sculpted by Susan Gamble, the USS Arizona Memorial on the campus of the University or Arizona consists of 1,511 dog tags--one for each of the sailors who were on board the USS Arizona December 7 1941 when it went down at Pearl Harbor. Each of the 1,511 tags is imprinted with the name of a sailor. The effect is sobering.

The complete sculpture resembles an 18-foot ship's mast with US and Arizona flags. The stenciled text that encompasses the tile work thanks those who lost there lives.
