November 26 was not just election day. It was also the season opening for the Khandallah swimming pool. I went along to try it out. Very refreshing. No heating. They must be hardy in the northern suburbs.

Here is the pool on a warmer day in 1931. Back then this would have seemed a thoroughly modern scene. Public swimming like this was still something new. More conservative types may still have preferred the old saltwater baths at Oriental bay, where mixed sex bathing was definitely not permitted.

The pool had opened in 1925 and it helped make the Khandallah Domain a popular picnic spot. For several years from 1928 there was a daily excursion bus from the city. You could walk in the bush, climb up to the view on Mt Kaukau, have a swim, and take afternoon tea.

You can still do all of that. It’s a good place to start or finish the new Skyline walkway. The old kiosk closed in 1950 but there is a comfortable café there now, and the pool is as invigorating as ever.
