From a recent trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this is a (somewhat enhanced) photo of a piece of equipment at an Alterra Coffee shop near Lake Michigan that used to be a water pumping station. My guess is that this was some sort of rheostat / controller, but whatever it was, it made for an interesting subject.

Salute To Steel, Too

This is a more straightforward rendering of a sculpture in Venice, Illinois entitled "Salute to Steel," that recognizes the importance of the steel industry to the communities of Granite City, Madison, and Venice, Illinois, each of which is represented by one of the intertwined rings at the top of the sculpture. The sculpture was designed by John Celuch of Inlandesign, Inc., of Edwardsville, Illinois. (The photo I posted yesterday was, in my view, a more interesting rendering of a detail of the same work)

This is a detail of a sculpture in Venice, Illinois entitled "Salute to Steel," that recognizes the importance of the steel industry to the communities of Granite City, Madison, and Venice, Illinois, each of which is represented by one of the intertwined rings at the top of the sculpture. The sculpture was designed by John Celuch of Inlandesign, Inc., of Edwardsville, Illinois. (I will be posting a more straightforward photo of the sculpture in the next day or so.)

The Chatillon-DeMenil Mansion

This shot of the Chatillon-DeMenil Mansion in the City of Saint Louis is part of a series of shots taken on Sunday, 9/25/11, at the Cherokee Street Antique Row photowalk of the Saint Louis Photography Meetup Group.

The Mansion's web site tells us that "The Mansion was built in two sections by families with very different lifestyles. Henri Chatillon built the first section, a four-room brick farmhouse, in 1848. He was a guide and hunter for the American Fur Company of St. Louis in the 1840's before settling permanently in the area with his second wife, Odile Delor Lux. Chatillon served as a guide for Francis Parkman, Jr. in 1846. Parkman wrote about their trip in his book "The Oregon Trail." Chatillon sold the "farmhouse" in 1856 to Dr. Nicolas N. DeMenil, a well known physician and part owner of the first chain of drug stores in St. Louis. DeMenil was a wealthy Frenchman. He came to St. Louis in 1834 and married Emilie Sophie Chouteau, who was a descendant of St. Louis' founding family. The DeMenils originally used the home as a summer retreat. In 1861, the DeMenils hired English architect Henry Pitcher to add on the extra rooms and turn the farmhouse into a Greek Revival Mansion. At that time they moved into the home permanently. The addition was completed in 1863."

From Cass Street Park in Milwaukee, WI, this is an image of one of several public sculptures, enhanced (I think) by a masked application of a black and white conversion.

Detail of a motorcycle at a (mostly) car show I took in while up in Stanley, Idaho recently. The mix of matte and chrome, lines and curves, light and dark in this composition appeal to me, and I think rendering it in black and white enhances those qualities.
