Rhue derives from An Rubha which means 'headland' in Gaelic. The full name of the area is 'RudhaCadail' which in Gaelic means 'the Point (i.e. headland) of the Sleepy People'.

Legend has it that the name came from sailors found asleep but quite unharmed on the rocks (where the lighthouse is now) after their boat was shipwrecked on a stormy night. The settlement is shown on earlier maps as "Ard-a-chadail", the 'village' of the sleepy people.

Fortunately, I had my camera in reach, when we saw this magnificent light on Ullapool through the windows of our Bed & Breakfast. It lasted only for a few seconds...

Info

Ullapool is a small town of around 1,300 inhabitants in Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland. Despite its small size it is the largest settlement for many miles around and a major tourist destination of Scotland. The North Atlantic Drift passes Ullapool, bringing moderate temperatures. A few Cordyline australis or New Zealand cabbage trees are grown in the town and are often mistaken for palms.

I was skiing in Chamrousse last week - it was very cold: -25°C! But the cold made the trees look amazing.

Radnické schody is a stairway in Hradčany, connecting Nerudova street below with Loretánská street above. The name means The Town Hall Stairway and it's derived from the former town hall of Hradčany (before merging the four towns of prague into a single city). The stairway is approximately 100 metres long and 127 steps and a height of 30 metres.

It is quite a pictoresque nook, because the stairway winds between old buildings and is even bridged over by one. At the lower end of the stairway there are statues of Saint Joseph with baby Jesus and Saint John of Nepomuk.

It's in fact a street, accessible only for pedestrians due to the steps. Radnické schody were built in 1663 to replace former steep road. The place was sometimes called also "Butchers' Hill" or "Meat shops hill" because there were several butcheries on the stairway.

Today, instead of butcheries, you'll find a pleasant café there.

This is the largest fig tree to grow in Europe.

Ficus macrophylla, commonly known as the Moreton Bay Fig, is a large evergreen banyan tree of the Moraceae family that is a native of most of the eastern coast of Australia, from the Atherton Tableland (17° S) in the north to the Illawarra (34° S) in New South Wales, and Lord Howe Island. Its common name is derived from Moreton Bay in Queensland, Australia. It is best known for its beautiful buttress roots, which are also known for damaging municipal footpaths.
