Frankfurt Skyline

Philipp Klinger Photography posted a photo:

One of the best spots to photograph the skyline of Frankfurt. It's a much used railway bridge, which vibrates quite a bit when a train passes. So timing the beginning of a long exposure is crucial.

This is a DRI (Dynamic Range Increase) photo. I took 5 exposures, ranging from 1 second (ISO 100) to 30 Seconds (ISO 400) and blended them manually in Photoshop. One shot isn't enough to get details in both, highlights and shadows.

Shot with the 24-105 L at 75mm. I'm still stunned how much detail the 5d mkII captures, compared to the D700, when looking at the photo fully magnified.

Click here to see how it looks on a sunny sunday morning

The D700 was really great-to-have in the metro stations - i only had to use ISO 900 here, but in other stations i even had to crank it up to 12800. No way i could have gotten all those shots handheld with another camera.

If you wonder, why most of my metro photos have an exposure time of 1/15sec - it's the time I've set as a minimum for the auto ISO function.

We sat down on the benches of the vestibule of the Grand Central Terminal for a while and this gentlemen in black came along and with came the light, which created this pattern.

A few minutes later we were (not so politely!) asked to go back behind the barrier (you can see it in the middle of the frame).

Info

Grand Central Terminal (GCT) — (sometimes incorrectly called) Grand Central Station or simply Grand Central — is a terminal station at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Built by and named for the New York Central Railroad in the heyday of American long-distance passenger trains, it is the largest train station in the world by number of platforms: 44, with 67 tracks along them. They are on two levels, both below ground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower, though the total number of tracks along platforms and in yards exceeds 100. When the Long Island Rail Road's new station, below the existing levels, opens (see East Side Access), Grand Central will offer a total of 75 tracks and 48 platforms. The terminal covers an area of 48 acres (19 ha).

The terminal serves commuters traveling on the Metro-North Railroad to Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in New York State, and Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut.

Although the terminal has been properly called "Grand Central Terminal" since 1913, many people continue to refer to it as "Grand Central Station". Technically, "Grand Central Station" is the name of the nearby post office, as well as the name of a previous rail station on the site, and is also used to refer to a New York City subway station at the same location.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Terminal

Technique/Processing

Despite the sunlight coming in through the window, it was rather dark so i dialed up the ISO to 2200, thus the slight grainy look. I didn't remove it in Photoshop because i think it fits the photo well...
Apple in Big Apple II

Philipp Klinger Photography posted a photo:

From the outside this time...

Technique/Processing

Really nothing fancy this time. The most complicated thing about this shot was to get all the lines lined up ;-)

P.S.: I mirrored the image horizonatally, in order to have the Apple logo right - it looked strange otherwise.

----------------------------------------

Info

The Big Apple is a nickname or moniker for New York City. It was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. Fitz Gerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph. Its popularity since the 1970s is due to a promotional campaign by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, known now as NYC & Company.

Although the history of the Big Apple was once considered a mystery, research over the past two decades, primarily by noted amateur etymologist Barry Popik and Professor Gerald Cohen of Missouri University of Science and Technology, has provided a reasonably clear picture of the term's history. Prior to their work, there were a number of false etymologies, of which the most ridiculous was the claim that the term derived from a New York brothel whose madam was known as Eve. This was subsequently exposed as a hoax and has been replaced on the source web site with more accurate information.

The Big Apple was first popularized as a reference to New York City by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of New York Morning Telegraph articles in the 1920s in reference to New York horse-racing. The earliest of these was a casual reference on May 3, 1921:

J. P. Smith, with Tippity Witchet and others of the L. T. Bauer string, is scheduled to start for "the big apple" to-morrow after a most prosperous Spring campaign at Bowie and Havre de Grace.

Fitz Gerald referred to the "big apple" frequently thereafter. He explained his use in a February 18, 1924, column under the headline "Around the Big Apple":

The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There's only one Big Apple. That's New York.

Two dusky stable hands were leading a pair of thoroughbred around the "cooling rings" of adjoining stables at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans and engaging in desultory conversation.

"Where y'all goin' from here?" queried one.

"From here we're headin' for The Big Apple," proudly replied the other.

"Well, you'd better fatten up them skinners or all you'll get from the apple will be the core," was the quick rejoinder.

Fitz Gerald's reference to the "dusky" stable hands suggests the term's origin may lie in African-American culture. Support for this is found in the Chicago Defender, an African-American newspaper that had a national circulation. “Ragtime” Billy Tucker, a vaudeville/ragtime performer and writer for the Defender, there used "big apple" to refer to New York in a non-horse-racing context on September 16, 1922:

I trust your trip to 'the big apple' (New York) was a huge success and only wish that I had been able to make it with you.

The same writer had earlier used "Big Apple" as a reference to a different city, Los Angeles. This example, from May 15, 1920, is the earliest known use of "Big Apple" to refer to any city. It is possible that the writer simply understood "Big Apple" as an appropriate nickname for any large city:
Dear Pal, Tony: No, Ragtime Billy Tucker hasn't dropped completely out of existence, but is still in the 'Big Apple', Los Angeles.

By the late 1920s, New York writers other than Fitz Gerald were starting to use "Big Apple" and were using it outside of a horse-racing context."The Big Apple" was a popular song and dance in the 1930s. Walter Winchell and other writers continued to use the name in the 1940s and 1950s.

By the 1960s, "the Big Apple" was known only as an old name for New York. In the early 1970s, however, the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau (now NYC & Company, the official marketing and tourism organization for New York City), under the leadership of its president, Charles Gillett, begin promoting "the Big Apple" as the city's moniker. It has remained popular since that time. Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in 1997 signed legislation designating the southwest corner of West 54th Street and Broadway, the corner on which John J. Fitz Gerald resided from 1934 to 1963, as "Big Apple Corner."

Since 1980, the New York Mets baseball team has featured a "Home Run Apple" that rises when a Mets player hits a home run at Shea Stadium and Citi Field.

Fitz Gerald resided from 1934 to 1963, as "Big Apple Corner."

Since 1980, the New York Mets baseball team has featured a "Home Run Apple" that rises when a Mets player hits a home run at Shea Stadium and Citi Field.
Standing at 319 metres (1,047 ft), it was the world's tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. After the destruction of the World Trade Center, it was again the second-tallest building in New York City until December 2007, when the spire was raised on the 365.8-metre (1,200 ft) Bank of America Tower, pushing the Chrysler Building into third position. In addition, The New York Times Building which opened in 2007, is exactly level with the Chrysler Building in height.

The Chrysler Building is a classic example of Art Deco architecture and considered by many contemporary architects to be one of the finest buildings in New York City. In 2007, it was ranked ninth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.

No HDR or DRI processing this time - only one single exposure, but i tried to retain as much detail in the highlights and shadows usind RAW and Nik's Color Efex (Tonal Contrast).

Info:

Grand Central Terminal (GCT) — often popularly (and incorrectly) called Grand Central Station or simply Grand Central — is a terminal station at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Built by and named for the New York Central Railroad in the heyday of American long-distance passenger trains, it is the largest train station in the world by number of platforms: 44, with 67 tracks along them. They are on two levels, both below ground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower. When the Long Island Rail Road's new station, below the existing levels, opens (see East Side Access), Grand Central will offer a total of 75 tracks and 48 platforms. The terminal covers an area of 48 acres.

I wish you a great start into the week.

Taken in the Staromestska Metro Station (If i remember correctly...) in Prague.

Technique/Processing

No tripod (thus ISO 1800 @ 1/15s) used. Just converted to b/w in Silver Efex, using a slight green/blue toning.

Processing took quite long though, because i had to clone out all of the 9349349394 chewing gums.
