9329up empty grain heads away from Bombo. In front is Bombo beach and houses with views are on the hill behind. The Illawarra escarpment makes the backdrop. Locos are 8128 and branchliners 48158 and 48144.

long running 4PW4

It has been 5 days since 4PW4 commenced its journey, as it runs through the big dipper into Yass Junction station. It is running over 6 hours late at this point, and won't reach its final destination (Port Kembla in Wollongong) for another 11 hours. Locos are NR114 and AN8. It is raining lightly, just after a heavy downpour passed through on a day of passing showers. During the downpour the temperature dropped to 15 C (59 F) on a supposed summer's afternoon.

4PW4 is a steel and general service, and runs from Perth via Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, stopping at a number of yards en route. It runs to a slow freight schedule, maximum 80 km/h.

low speed

Standard 1980s CTC signalling in NSW. Entry to the main line or loop at a crossing location, when the starting signal is at stop, is usually on a "low speed" indication with a stencil route display (normally "M" for main or "L" for loop). Low speed is a subsidiary indication which advises that the next signal is at stop, and that it should be approached with extra caution because the line immediately beyond may be obstructed (no overlap).

The up home at Robertson is cleared for the Cockatoo Run to proceed into the station. The route indicator is barely visible in the low sunlight.

ST23 Melbourne XPT arrives at Yass Junction about 45 minutes late. The decommissioned signal box is leased by a small syndicate of rail enthusiasts.

The leading power car, 2000, is the class leader and is 30 years old this year. The XPT has aged well.

Normally this region would be starting to look parched in December, but this year has seen a very cool and wet start to summer in NSW.

Four NRs are on the lead, all in PN stars livery! The fouth NR was shut down for fuel saving, only 3 being required for the load. Overall length was 1608 metres, after detaching two 5-packs at Goobang (Linfox at Parkes).

Telephoto view in patchy rain. The "road" is set for ST24 up XPT to cross to the down main so it can make its station stop at number 1 platform. The "band of yellow" lights were pulsating, indicating that the next signal shows a proceed indication.

Leaving Goulburn on Friday evening 16 December 2011, brand new loco CF4402 is rapidly accelerating its 5 car special. The CF class are the latest locos to be obtained by CFCLA.

The train is a Christmas special for employees of CFCLA's Goulburn workshop, and the opportunity was taken to showcase CFCLA's newest loco. With gross engine output close to 4600 hp and AC traction motors, it had no trouble powering the light train!
