For once it was a lovely day this wk-end in my part of the world,thought just how nice it would be if the world had a peaceful week to come ahwell maybe.....The name Melbourne means "mill stream" (or "mill spring"). It was first recorded in Domesday Book (DB 1086 Mileburne = mill stream) as a royal manor.

A parish church was built around 1120.

Medieval Church consisting of nave, south aisle, chancel and 13th Century West Tower. Interesting fittings particularly the font, formed out of part of a cross of the 8th or 9th Century, and believed to be the second oldest font in the country.

Also of note are the glass, monuments, and floor tiles of the Willoughby Chapel. The Church was much damaged by a fire in 1917

according to records a church has been here since AD822,must admit took alot of pics over the years as its down the road from me,and tho i am not religious i do find it a peaceful place.

Tutbury Castle lies on the site of the original Norman settlement which was destroyed in 1174 during a rebellion against King Henry II. Edmund Crouchback, the first Earl of Lancaster, started the renovation work in 1270. The fortress is situated in the small and picturesque town of Tutbury on the banks of the river Dove in North Midlands, overlooking Hanbury and Needwood. Only the outer part remains of what used to consist of a south tower with a winding staircase and two chambers and the high tower in which Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for a time. It is said to have been the residence of the Saxon Lords of Mercia, and is named after the god Thor or Thoth who was worshipped at this spot.

First let us go back to the 10th century before the Norman Conquest, as the first church on this site was probably an Anglo Saxon one. Some traces of an earlier church have been found but their origins are a bit doubtful.

We do know a lot about the Norman church because much of it is still standing and well documented. The building was started about 1086 by Henry de Ferrers and was consecrated on the 15th August 1089. This date is the church festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary to whom the church is dedicated and we have noted before how August 15th became a key date around which the later Medieval fair revolved.

About 60 years after the church was finished, Robert de Ferrers built a Priory and staffed it with a Prior and twelve brothers from Normandy. They were Benedictines, dedicated to St. Peter and that’s why it was a priory rather than a monastery....Then Henry Vlll dissolved the monasteries and in September 1538, the Priory surrendered to the King’s representatives. The Prior received a pension and became the Vicar. The Priory buildings and the monastic parts of the church were demolished; the King took the lead and other valuables.

The Priory stone was used to build a house on the site but nothing now remains. The church, much reduced was left standing because it was the Parish Church in which the peasants worshipped.

There is a complete list of Priors from about 1100 to 1538 on display inside.

There have been some alterations to the Norman Church since the dissolution. The eastern end by the altar was immediately walled off to make the church serviceable and the roof was lowered. The present tower was built by Edward l and the North Aisle was built in 1829. The floor was raised to put in hot water pipes and a new roof was put on in 1867.

i went in vain to find a kingfisher?LISTED BRIDGE...The land adjacent to the River Dove is home to 'Thistley Meadow'. This community nature reserve has gone from strength to strength over recent years through the dedication and hard work of local residents. From this southern part of the village there are excellent views across the river to Tutbury Castle and the long horizon beyond adds to the open panoramic views from the bridge. Towards the northern part of the village there is a good network of footpaths and bridle ways which can be used to navigate round the village or used as a link to the neighbouring villages of Hilton and Marston-on-Dove; or even further beyond into the less populated villages of South Derbyshire which link Hatton with the open farmland that reaches up towards Ashbourne and the Peak District National Park. Heathland and pasture are the dominant environmental features and this balances well with the residential and commercial aspects of the village

Yesterday i pursuaded a scaffolder friend of mine to let me climb with him and 120ft later and awesome fun..View of homes etc and Spondon church in the distance thought it would be a different take on my world.Have a great wk-end all.
