I am so grateful that in a city of noise, cars and crowded streets, I can walk out my apartment building's door and see this scene. The crab apple and magnolia trees are an ever changing source of beauty and wonder.

Woosh - NYC Times Square Shuttle

It looks better this way: click to decluttr

One winter morning I met with a happy surprise at the 42nd Street Times Square shuttle to Grand Central. I had never seen a train like this in NYC. It's something new and was advertiser supported. How terrific. Each car had a different theme inside and the outside was covered in tulips. It was too crowded inside to catch a good shot between the time the cars filled up and emptied out. Remember people do rush (push) to get in & out of trains. This is NYC after all. What a breath of happiness in the middle of the gray underground.

In the next few moments some other scenes:

Just happened to catch this before I got on a trusty escalator. I've gotten into the habit of taking my little coolpix with me wherever I go. It's much easier than always carrying my larger Nikon. (Thanks me*voila for the suggestion!) So every once in a while I get lucky. As you can see, I haven't really worked out the ideal exposures: lots of noise. But sometimes that really doesn't matter does it.

There was indeed a LOT of snow.

The pier you see in the distance is at 66th street. During the summer it is buzzing with skaters, sun bathers, movies in the evening and folks lolling about. From the end of the pier you can see the George Washington Bridge. Of course it was difficult with all the snow to travel to the end and very few braved the walk. The snow in the foreground is high from a plough's work. However, we did have 20 inches and there was snow up to my knees.
The boat basin at 79th and Riverside Park. Snow falling madly and hands getting frozen. It appears blue because the sun was totally hiding and I didn't color correct the temp of my exposure. So I would do this in my little digital darkroom. But not for now. Ok?

These are the real water lovers. They are the folks who live year round on house boats. The boat to the far right is owned by a wonderful woman who taught my oldest son in kindergarten. She told us that contrary to the belief that she lived in a small house boat, she had the largest living quarters you could hope for: the park, the river, the trees. You can almost make out the far side, which is New Jersey.

This is how my morning started. It was very white out there. And windy. I couldn't wait to get over to the river.

Yes, living in an apartment building makes the snow even more romantic when you think about the fact that you don't have to shovel. Just clean off the car from 20 inches of snow. But if you're lucky enough to have a child to do the work for you - well you add that to your list of life's blessings.
