Pointing to the Heavens | Golden Chedi of Wat Bowonniwet | Bangkok

I Prahin | www.southeastasia-images.com posted a photo:

Wat Bowonniwet Vihara (Thai: วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร) is a first-class Royal Buddhist monastery in Bangkok, Thailand. The temple is a center of the Thammayut Nikaya school of Thai Theravada Buddhism and has been a major temple of patronage for the Chakri dynasty. It is the shrine-hall of Phra Phutthachinasri (พระพุทธชินสีห์) which was moulded in about 1357.

The temple (wat) was construced by King Rama III bearing his trademark Chinese influence. King Mongkut served as abbot here during his 27 years in the monkhood and found the strict Thammayut sect of Buddhism, for which the temple is now the headquarters. There have been six abbots from the beginning to the present, three of whom have been Supreme Patriarchs (including the current one). Since Mongkut, many Thai kings have served their monkhoods in the temple, including the current monarch, Rama IX.

Restoration of most of the vast complex was recently completed. As you can see here the golden colors are amazing, and nicely complemented by a rare blue sky in Bangkok.

Explore(d) July 3, 2011 #387

Wat Plai Laem, located in the north of Koh Samui, near to the Big Buddha, was built in 2004. Khun Jarit Phumdonming, architect/artist of the temple, spent more than three years adding finer details to the exterior.

This Chinese-style, smiling Buddha, was a giant – about 30 metres high. The colors are vibrant in real life; I had to tone down further in PP. Best perspective would be from a higher vantage point but I didn't carry a ladder with me!

Giant, 18-armed Buddha seen at Wat Plai Laem, located in the north of Koh Samui, near to the Big Buddha, was built in 2004. Khun Jarit Phumdonming, architect/artist of the temple, spent more than three years adding finer details to the exterior.

It was one of the most vibrantly painted temples I’ve seen in Thailand; great fun to photograph! Revisted this place last week; I am so much happier with this image compared to 2 years ago!

This house is one of the last surviving Chinese Villas in Little India. Built in 1900, this eight-room villa was built for Tan Teng Niah’s wife. Mr Tan was a prominent Chinese businessman and owned a confectionery business and other smaller ones such as a few sweet-making factories along Serangoon Road and a rubber smokehouse in Kerbau Road. He was one of the non-Indian communities who prospered in Little India.

The villa has many interesting features such as a courtyard, gilded name plate with the calligraphic inscription “siew song” or Elegant Pine (the pine being a symbol of endurance), richly carved pintu pagar (decorative swinging doors), bamboo tiled roof and calligraphic scrolls hanging from the living room. The villa has been restored and has been leased for commercial use.

Continuing the Chinese New Year in Bangkok theme ... This riverside temple is part of a large compound built by the Chee Chin Khor Moral Uplifting Society (What a great name!). The society was formed in 1952 to perform charitable works.
Happy Chinese (Lunar) New Year / Gong Xi Fa Cai / Gong Hey Fat Choy !!!

Traditional celebration at Thonburi's Kuan Ou Shrine. The shrine, or "godfather's hall" as they are called in Thai, almost certainly dates from before Bangkok's founding. This area was formerly the main port of Siam back in the time when Ayutthaya was the capital. The district was home to traders from many lands, including China and Portugual.
Visited with Thai-On.

We arrived just in time for human tower forming, followed by lion dance and firecrackers. By the time I captured this image, attendees were watching an open air screening of a Hollywood thriller of some sort (on the left hand side)! This was a tough image to process with the color cost and exposures. Wishing my Chinese contacts a healthy and prosperous Year of the Snake ahead.

Taken this morning in Chinatown which resembled Venice; well Bangkok used to be dubbed "Venice of the East". The Circle is elevated so the police have set up a flood command post there together with some boats you can see stacked up on the wall. I waded through water about 50cm deep to get here. See the comparison image below.
(Almost) Floating Temple #2 | Wat Kalayanamit | Bangkok

I Prahin | www.southeastasia-images.com posted a photo:

Wat Kalayanamit was built by Rama III in the first half of the nineteenth century. This was a time when trade with China was at its peak. China was seen as a useful counterbalance to the growing influence of European powers in southeast Asia. Many things Chinese became popular, including statuary and architecture. While the huge wiharn maintains the traditions of Thai style, the two flanking buildings - one of which is the ubosot - as well as many other small pavilions in the compound, look very Chinese.

Inside the massive wiharn is an equally huge Buddha image which fills almost the entire interior of the prayer hall. The walls of the wiharn are painted with contemporary scenes from the time of the temple's construction. Next to the wiharn, a bell tower barely contains the largest bronze bell in Thailand.

This temple will likely be totally inundated by the river this coming weekend.
(Almost) Floating Temple #2 | Wat Kalayanamit | Bangkok

Guardians at the Gate of the Royal Chedis | Wat Po | Bangkok

I Prahin | www.southeastasia-images.com posted a photo:

Just behind the opulent extravagance of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha stands Wat Phra Chetuphon, which is more commonly known by its old name of Wat Po. Most western tourists don't get past the temple's huge reclining Buddha, but there is actually much more to see than the one colossal statue.

Next to the Reclining Buddha wiharn is an enclosure holding the four largest of the temple's 95 chedis. All of the chedi at Wat Po are square, rather than the round bell shape generally preferred at the time. They are decorated with ceramic tiles and three dimensional ceramic pieces which form intricate floral patterns.

I am embarrassed that this one of the only images I have in my stream from this popular location. Have to load some more soon! This would be perfect if there was a monk walking through the doorway....

The convergence of Yaowarat and Charoen Krung roads was formerly a vacant piece of land adjacent to Odeon Cinema. During 1958-1959, the Prime Minister Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat approved the traffic circle construction, featuring a fountain in the middle, which the people called Odeon Circle. but in 1998, the fountain was removed as it was occupied by some stray homeless for their personal uses. Subsequently, the commemorial arch construction in honour of His Majesty The King Rama IX has taken place instead.
On the arch is written four big Chinese characters in the handwriting of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, 萬壽無疆, meaning "Long Live The King".

Wat Plai Laem, located in the north of Koh Samui, near to the Big Buddha, was built in 2004. Khun Jarit Phumdonming, architect/artist of the temple, spent more than three years adding finer details to the exterior.

The temple is also famous for the hundreds of big fish living in the lake and waiting to be fed (food is available at the temple for a small donation of 10 Baht per pack).

It was one of the most vibrantly painted temples I’ve seen in Thailand; great fun to photograph!
