The Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank was founded in 1850 by members Irish Emigrant Society to encourage recent arrivals to save money; seventy-five years later, it was the largest savings bank in the United States. This building (Raymond F. Almirall, 1912) was third the bank had on this location. Today it's home to the New York City Parking Violations Bureau.

One of the fabled retail outfits of 19th Century New York, Arnold, Constable & Company is now remembered--when it is remembered--for being another entry in New York's big bloated list of defunct department stores, having expired in 1975 after just about 150 years of business. Built in 1856, 307-311 Canal Street was the site of the company's first big store.

1 Wall Street (left): hot-cha Art Deco skyscraper. Ralph Walker, 1921. Now home to The Bank of New York.

Empire Building (right): Francis Kimball, 1898. Was the home to U.S. Steel for three-quarters of a century. Now (of course) it's apartments.

At the former Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company Building, 510 Fifth Avenue. A glorious glass box designed by Gordon Bunshaft; one of the rare modernist buildings honored with a landmark designation from the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.
