Derelict Railway Bridge

This overgrown stone bridge once spanned a twin-track section of the former railway branch line connecting Otley and Pool to Arthington, Burley and Menston. The route of the trackbed makes for a great walk at this time of year; full of greenery and wildlife amid the crumbling remains of these forgotten artifacts. The section beyond the bridge is flooded but the landowner seems to have dammed the water with loose stone and rubble to keep the trackbed of this segment dry.

There was a beautiful sunset brewing as we travelled further upstream on the second day. This photograph was taken from Lightbank Lock, a lovely quiet spot not far from the rochdale canal summit. There are far fewer residential areas this high up in the Pennines, so there's less light pollution and clearer nights.

A panoramic view looking under an abandoned bridge. The last time this trackbed saw a train was the 22nd March 1965, the day on which Otley railway station was shut down. Forty five years have seen the surrounding vegetation quickly reclaim the land and ponds have sprung up within the embankment.

Abandoned Bridge (Old Otley Branch Line)

Because the low cutting of the old rail trackbed catches so much water, many parts of it have turned into a sort of marshy wetland and are populated by all sorts of flora and fauna. This particular bridge is in the process of being consumed by a huge ivy plant.

For more pictures of this abandoned branch line, see the Otley Railway set.
