I finished my photos of Venice. Venice teeters on the edge of cliché with its lace-work of canals, its domes and gilded spires, its kiosks with straw gondolier hats and refrigerator magnets in the shape of the Piazza San Marco. Postcard fodder, and yet...Venice is beautiful. I try to get at the essence of Venice although I only stay one full day and night. Explore away from the main tourist thoroughfares. Don't be afraid to get lost. You'll discover some of your favourite sights this way. I hope you like my collection. Thanks for all comments and faves.

Zo dit is m'n laatste upload van Venetië. Venetië balanceert op de rand van cliche met zijn netwerk van kanalen, de koepels en vergulde torenspitsen, kiosken met de gondelier strohoeden en het druk bezochte Piazza San Marco maar toch ...Venetië is en blijft prachtig. Ik heb geprobeerd toch de essentie van deze mooie stad vast te leggen alhoewel in maar één volle dag verbleef. Ontdek de buurt buiten de belangrijkste toeristische plekken. Wees niet bang om te verdwalen. Een wandeling door de vele kleine straatjes doet je écht kennismaken met de levenswijze van de Venetianen. Bedankt voor alle opmerkingen en favorieten.

Venice is unique among all great cities of the world in that its streets are full of water. Made up of 118 islands only two to four feet above sea level, crisscrossed by 117 canals, and connected by some 360 briges, its main avenue is the curving Grand Canal, its buses the vaporetti. There is no other city in the world of this size and sophistication where the automobile is absent. The richness, color, light, texture, and history create a scene of overwhelming beauty. During the middle ages, Venice became a world maritime power connecting the Occident and the Orient, accumulating in the process immense wealth that is celebrated in art and architecture through the city. The whole city is an extraordinary architectural masterpiece in which even the smallest building contains works by some of the world's greatest artists such as Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and others. While the glories of the past are evident at every turn, the outlying neighborhoods and islands are still animated by a villager lifestyle which must have been unchanged through the centuries. Venice its Lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Viewpoint from The Ponte degli Scalzi "bridge of the barefoot - monks", is one of only four bridges in Venice, Italy, to span the Grand Canal. The bridge connects the sestieri of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. I caught some really nice sunset colors along the Grand Canal of Venice.

De Venetianen vestigden zich in de 6e eeuw na Christus op de eilanden van de lagune bij het tegenwoordige Venetië, opdat barbaren hen niet konden bereiken. De lagune bestond uit kleine eilanden met een netwerk van smalle kanalen, niet diep genoeg voor de grote zeeschepen van de barbaren. Het leven op de lagune werd mogelijk gemaakt door het gebruik van een smalle, lichte boot die mensen en goederen kon vervoeren. Deze Gondel boot werd bestuurd door een enkele roeier die op de achterkant van de boot stond, zodat hij goed zicht had. Venetië bezoeken zonder een tochtje in een gondel te maken kan natuurlijk best, want lopend en met de vaporetti kun je overal komen, maar misschien is het toch beter een bedrag te reserveren om Venetië te bekijken zoals het bekeken moet worden: langzaam voortglijdend door stille grachten tussen hoge huizen, begeleid door het geplons van de riem in het water. Houd er rekening mee dat de gondeliers een soort maffia vormen, waarvan een aantal leden er niet voor terugdeinst toeristen te bedonderen, dus maak tevoren duidelijke afspraken over de tocht en probeer flink af te dingen. Er kunnen zes personen in een gondel en een tochtje van 40 minuten kost overdag volgens het officiële tarief € 80 euro en 's avonds 100 euro; elke 20 minuten langer kost € 40 of € 50 meer. Laat je de gondelier een lied zingen, kost dat veel extra geld! Maar je kunt een heel kort, goedkoop gondeltochtje maken met de traghetto, een openbare gondel die op enkele plaatsen de oversteek over het Canal Grande maakt. Zo'n tochtje kost slechts 50 cent!

The Italian word palazzo usually means any large building rather than a palace; but many of Vinice's palazzi do merit the grander translation. Some of the town's buildings are medieval, with several in the Venetian Gothic style, but the majority date from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They line the narrow lanes of Venice's town centre; which are called contra, a local word for 'street'.

Venice is a city in northeast Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artworks.The city in its entirety is listed as World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon. The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. For centuries gondolas were the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transport in the city, serving as traghetti -ferries over the Grand Canal. They are also used in special regattas rowing races held amongst gondoliers. The gondola is propelled like punting, except an oar is used instead of a pole. Their primary role today, however, is to carry tourists on rides at fixed rates. There can be six people in a gondola and a ride of 40 minutes during the day according to the official rate costs € 80 euros and evening EUR 100. Additional money if the gondolier sing a song! But you can have a very short, short gondola ride to the traghetto, a public gondola that in a few places to cross the Grand Canal makes. Such a trip costs only 50 cents!

During the Italian Renaissance, Venice gave birth to an artistic style known as the Venetian School (1450-1600 A.D) that placed importance reflected light and its impact on color. The richness in Venetian color reflected the wealth prominent in Venice during the Renaissance. The dark reds, brilliant blues and muted yellows used in the oil paintings of Venetian School artists such as Jacopo Bellini have both a deepness and transparency meant to reflect light and expose the shades of layered color.

Connecting the districts of San Polo and San Marco across the Grand Canal in the heart of the city, the Rialto Bridge has always been a busy crossing in Venice. The present stone bridge, a single span designed by Antonio da Ponte, was finally completed in 1591.

The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century B.C.Venice has decayed since its heyday and is heavily touristed ,there are slightly more tourists than residents, but the romantic charm remains. Venice, the world's only pedestrian city, is easily walkable, and the absence of cars makes this a particularly pleasant experience. However, walking and standing all day can also be exhausting, so it is best to pace yourself. The best way to get around a bit more quickly by numerous vaporetti water buses and water taxis. If you want to have a romantic ride along the canals, take a gondola ride.

Venice has always been a mecca for the Street Performer. This wonderful cello player blessed every passerby with beautiful, free, live music as they walked in the old centre of Venice. Nice guy. I thought he was so great. At least the best improvising cellist I've ever heard on the streets. His name is Peter Lewy and please listen to his Solo Cello CD. It is a mix of original pieces and improvisations.

Doge's Palace in summertime

Piazza San Marco and the Doge's Palace in Venice are among the busiest tourist destinations on the planet. In San Marco you are right there in the centre of things, always just a couple minutes walk from the Grand Canal, and close enough to Piazza San Marco to stroll around "the most elegant drawing-room of Europe," as Napoleon famously called it, any time of the day or night. Piazza San Marco and the Doge's Palace in Venice are among the busiest tourist destinations on the planet. In San Marco you are right there in the centre of things, always just a couple minutes walk from the Grand Canal, and close enough to Piazza San Marco to stroll around "the most elegant drawing-room of Europe," as Napoleon famously called it, any time of the day or night.

Het Dogepaleis aan het San Marcoplein in Venetië was het paleis van de doge, de leider van de Republiek Venetië. Het is een van de belangrijkste niet-religieuze bouwwerken in de gotische stijl. Het huidige paleis is gebouwd tussen 1309 en 1424, maar de fundamenten dateren uit de 9de eeuw. De oplettende bezoeker kan in de muur van het Dogepaleis een bijzonder beeldhouwwerk -bas-reliëf ontdekken: de zogenaamde Bocca di Leone, een leeuwenbek. Onder de opening staat de tekst: Geheime kennisgeving tegen degenen, die diensten en plichten verheimelijken of in het geheim afspreken om hun ware gewin te verbergen. De leeuwenbek werd gebruikt om anoniem aangifte te doen van misstanden als belastingontduiking, omkoperij en verduistering van staatsgeld. Men deponeerde daarvoor een papier in de opening.

The square is full of pigeons and they provide lots of free entertainment. People feed them, pose for pictures with them, and even chase them. However, the pigeons are becoming a problem and the city has recently outlawed selling food for feeding the pigeons in Venice. Venetië bezoeken zonder een tochtje in een gondel te maken kan natuurlijk best, want lopend en met de vaporetti kun je overal komen, maar misschien is het toch beter een bedrag te reserveren om Venetië te bekijken zoals het bekeken moet worden: langzaam voortglijdend door stille grachten tussen hoge huizen, begeleid door het geplons van de riem in het water. Houd er rekening mee dat de gondeliers een soort maffia vormen, waarvan een aantal leden er niet voor terugdeinst toeristen te bedonderen, dus maak tevoren duidelijke afspraken over de tocht en probeer flink af te dingen. Er kunnen zes personen in een gondel en een tochtje van 40 minuten kost overdag volgens het officiële tarief € 80 euro en 's avonds 100 euro; elke 20 minuten langer kost € 40 of € 50 meer. Laat je de gondelier een lied zingen, kost dat veel extra geld! Maar je kunt een heel kort, goedkoop gondeltochtje maken met de traghetto, een openbare gondel die op enkele plaatsen de oversteek over het Canal Grande maakt. Zo'n tochtje kost slechts 50 cent!

During the Italian Renaissance, Venice gave birth to an artistic style known as the Venetian School (1450-1600 A.D) that placed importance reflected light and its impact on color. The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. For centuries gondolas were the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transport in the city, serving as traghetti -ferries over the Grand Canal. They are also used in special regattas rowing races held amongst gondoliers. The gondola is propelled like punting, except an oar is used instead of a pole. Their primary role today, however, is to carry tourists on rides at fixed rates. There can be six people in a gondola and a ride of 40 minutes during the day according to the official rate costs € 80 euros and evening EUR 100. Additional money if the gondolier sing a song! But you can have a very short, short gondola ride to the traghetto, a public gondola that in a few places to cross the Grand Canal makes. Such a trip costs only 50 cents!

Venetië bezoeken zonder een tochtje in een gondel te maken kan natuurlijk best, want lopend en met de vaporetti kun je overal komen, maar misschien is het toch beter een bedrag te reserveren om Venetië te bekijken zoals het bekeken moet worden: langzaam voortglijdend door stille grachten tussen hoge huizen, begeleid door het geplons van de riem in het water. Houd er rekening mee dat de gondeliers een soort maffia vormen, waarvan een aantal leden er niet voor terugdeinst toeristen te bedonderen, dus maak tevoren duidelijke afspraken over de tocht en probeer flink af te dingen. Er kunnen zes personen in een gondel en een tochtje van 40 minuten kost overdag volgens het officiële tarief € 80 euro en 's avonds 100 euro; elke 20 minuten langer kost € 40 of € 50 meer. Laat je de gondelier een lied zingen, kost dat veel extra geld! Maar je kunt een heel kort, goedkoop gondeltochtje maken met de traghetto, een openbare gondel die op enkele plaatsen de oversteek over het Canal Grande maakt. Zo'n tochtje kost slechts 50 cent!

We bezochten Scuola Grande di San Teodoro. Dit was een zeer aangenaam concert in hartje Venetië. De muziek bevatte een barokke en Opera concert met het orkest spelen stukken van Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, en enkele andere componisten. Er waren drie prima zangers, een soprano, tenor en baritone.. Het orkest bestond uit een fluit, oboe, clarinet, bass, cello, en violen. Het was een zeer mooi live concert. Het is op loopafstand van de Rialtobrug.
