We booked our summer holiday to Thailand this year already since tickets are so expensive nowadays.
I remember this little Malaysian island 64 km south of the Thai border. We spend such a nice time here in summer of 2000. I know such places are hard to find nowadays. Tourist industry will find this island one day....

Photo taken in 2000 with my precious Minolta X-700 SLR camera. A camera who survived 25 years of travelling around the globe.

In the absence of tourism, economic activity on the Pulau Redang Island would be limited to small-scale fishing. Owing to the Islands' protected status, the main tourist activities are minimal in environmental impact: sunbathing, snorkeling, scuba diving, turtle and shark-watching. The only electrical power is provided by diesel generators and is not 24-hour. Fresh water is provided by springs. In this respect, the Pulau Redang Islands are prized by tourists as an 'escape' from the modern world.

The only access to the Islands is by boat from the fishing villages of Kuala Besut and Tok Bali. Local tourist operators run fishing boats ones per day.

Atlas is an icon in Greek mythology and commonly used in western culture, as a symbol of strength or stoic endurance. He is supporting an enormous round globe on his back and shoulders. The globe originally represented the celestial sphere of ancient astronomy, rather than the earth. The use of the term atlas as a name for collections of terrestrial maps and the modern understanding of the earth. Atlas stands on the Royal Palace at the Dam in Amsterdam. In former days to children it was told that as if Atlas let the ball fall, Amsterdam would go down under!

Atlas is een figuur uit de Griekse mythologie. Atlas draagt volgens de legende het hemelgewelf op zijn schouders en is de grondlegger van het Atlasgebergte.
Atlas staat op het Paleis op de Dam In Amsterdam. Staande op het fronton aan de achtergevel aan de Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal torst Atlas de wereldbol. Vroeger werd aan kinderen verteld dat als Atlas zijn bol zou laten vallen, Amsterdam ten onder zou gaan!

Are you ready? A total lunar eclipse will take place on Thursday, February 21, 2008 (and Wednesday evening, February 20), the first of two lunar eclipses in 2008, and the only total eclipse. The next total lunar eclipse will not occur until December 21, 2010! Total Lunar Eclipse time @ 04:26 AM CET. I hope the weather keeps as clear as today. Check out the NASA website for details.

De Montelbaanstoren is een Amsterdamse toren uit 1516 aan de Oudeschans. De oorsprong van de naam is onbekend. De toren heeft als bijnaam Malle Jaap, omdat de klokken van de toren ooit op onregelmatige tijden spontaan begonnen te spelen.
De Montelbaanstoren is gebouwd toen het middeleeuws Amsterdam werd uitgebreid door het industrieterrein Lastage bij de stad te trekken. Hiervoor werd aan de oostkant een nieuwe gracht gegraven, de huidige Oude Schans. Waar deze het IJ naderde werd een verdedigingstoren neergezet.
In 1606 verloor de toren zijn verdedigingsfunctie. Er werd toen een sierbekroning in renaissance-stijl op geplaatst, ontworpen door stadsbouwmeester Hendrick de Keyser. De Montelbaanstoren werd daarmee 48 meter hoog. In de toren kwam een uurwerk, en enkele luidklokken. Rembrandt, die in de buurt woonde, tekende de toren in 1644.
Achter de Montelbaanstoren ligt de Zuiderkerk. Dit is de eerste voor de protestantse eredienst ontworpen kerk in Amsterdam. De kerk is gebouwd nabij de Sint Antoniesbreestraat in de Lastage, een buurt die eind 16e eeuw bij de stad werd gevoegd. Tegenwoordig is dit de Nieuwmarktbuurt. De kerk is gebouwd tussen 1603 en 1611. Het ontwerp in renaissancestijl is van de Amsterdamse architect Hendrick de Keyser. Toen Hendrick de Keyser in 1621 overleed, werd hij in de Zuiderkerk begraven.

Bohemian Switzerland also known as Czech Switzerland (Czech: České Švýcarsko) is a picturesque region in the north-western Czech Republic. It lies on the Czech side of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains north of Děčín on both sides of the Elbe River. It extends eastward into the Lusatian Mountains and westward into the Ore Mountains. Its highest elevation is the mountain Děčínský Sněžník at 726m above sea level. It has been a protected area. The region along the right side of the Elbe became a national park on January 1, 2000, the České Švýcarsko National Park.

It's a 2 hours hike towards the largest stone bridge in Europe the Pravčická brána in Bohemian - Czech.

Het Nationale Park Boheems Zwitserland is een prachtig gebied van ongerepte natuur in het noorden van Tsjechie aan de Duitse grens. Het park is beroemd vanwege de zandstenen rotscomplexen. Het park is zeer toegankelijk voor wandelaars. De grootste zandstenen brug van Europa, Pravcicka Brana, is de grootste attractie van Boheems Zwitserland. Van heinde en verre ziet je de brug boven alles uitsteken. En eerlijk is eerlijk, dit natuurwonder maakt niet allen op postkaarten, maar vooral in het echt een verpletterende indruk.

Valletta is the capital city of Malta. It is located in the central-eastern portion of the island of Malta. The Most Humble City of Valletta with the building of bastions, curtains and ravelins, along with the beauty of the baroque buildings along its streets, it became known as Superbissima — 'Most Proud', amongst the ruling houses of Europe. Valletta as "a city of palaces built by gentlemen for gentlemen". In 1980 the City was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Valletta is de hoofdstad van de republiek Malta, op het gelijknamige eiland in de Middellandse Zee. De stad staat sinds 1980 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO.
De stad heeft een uniek laat-middeleeuws centrum met volledig intacte ommuring. Het is de zetel van de Maltese regering en het parlement. Valletta is een belangrijk verkeersknooppunt en heeft een mooie haven.

Wales is one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom. Wales is closely, but not completely, integrated politically with England. Wales is located in the south-west of the island of Great Britain and is bordered by England to the east, the Bristol Channel to the south and the Irish Sea to the west and north. Wales has over 1,200km (750 miles) of great coastline.

Wales is een voormalig vorstendom en vormt met Engeland, Noord-Ierland en Schotland één staat: het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Wales ligt in het westen van het eiland Groot-Brittannië en grenst in het oosten aan Engeland. Wales kent een eigen taal, een eigen vlag en binnenlands bestuur, maar in de internationale betrekkingen speelt als soevereine staat alleen het Verenigd Koninkrijk een rol. Wales heeft een schitterende kustlijn van 1200 km. Daarnaast liggen er enkele eilanden voor de kust van Wales.

Heavy snowfall engulfs Europe

Europe is struggling to cope with sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfalls. Such snowfall causes lots of trouble but a so lovely scenery. Well, just a flashback in time... Can you feel the cold?

Deze foto is alweer 6 jaar geleden genomen in de Eifel gebied van Duitland. Zware sneeuwval levert veel overlast maar ook de mooiste plaatjes.

Freezing morning fog touched by sun

Steam fog, also called evaporation fog, is the most localized form and is created by cold air passing over much warmer water or moist land. It often causes freezing fog, or sometimes hoar frost.

Mist kan zich vormen door afkoeling van zeer vochtige lucht (tot onder het dauwpunt) of door menging van koude met warme vochtige lucht. De vorming van mist hangt af van veel factoren, zoals begroeiing, reliëf en de nabijheid van open water. Deze foto had ik 'smorgen vroeg genomen van het Westelijk Marktkanaal pal naast mijn appartement.

The Moon is in synchronous rotation, meaning that it keeps nearly the same face turned towards the Earth at all times. Early in the Moon's history, its rotation slowed and became locked in this configuration as a result of frictional effects associated with tidal deformations caused by the Earth. Long ago when the Moon spun much faster, its tidal bulge preceded the Earth-Moon line because it couldn't "snap back" its bulges quickly enough to keep its bulges in line with Earth. The rotation swept the bulge beyond the Earth-Moon line. This out-of-line bulge caused a torque, slowing the Moon spin, like a wrench tightening a nut. When the Moon's spin slowed enough to match its orbital rate, then the bulge always faced Earth, the bulge was in line with Earth, and the torque disappeared. That is why the Moon rotates at the same rate as it orbits and we always see the same side of the Moon.

De maan is, samen met de zon en de draaiing van de aarde, verantwoordelijk voor de getijdenwerking op de aarde. Deze getijdenwerking zorgt ervoor dat de draaisnelheid (rotatie) van de aarde langzaam afneemt. Van haar kant oefent de aarde ook getijdenwerking op de maan uit, maar wel van een orde grootte sterker. Hierdoor is de draaisnelheid van de maan al zo sterk afgenomen dat zij precies evenveel tijd nodig heeft om om haar eigen as te draaien, als éénmaal om de aarde (synchrone rotatie). Dat verklaart waarom we vanaf de aarde altijd dezelfde kant van de maan zien.

The Moon (Latin: Luna) is Earth's only natural satellite, and is the fifth largest one in the Solar System. The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,450 km. The side of the Moon that faces Earth is called the near side, and the opposite side the far side. The far side should not be confused with the dark side, which is the hemisphere that is not being illuminated by the Sun at a given moment (this may be the side facing the Earth, as it is once a month during the New Moon phase). The far side of the Moon was first photographed by the Soviet probe Luna 3 in 1959.
A meteoroid is a small sand to boulder-sized particle of debris in the Solar system. The visible path of a meteoroid that enters Earth's atmosphere is a meteor, commonly called a "shooting star" or "falling star".

De maan is de enige natuurlijke maan van de aarde en wordt soms aangeduid met haar Latijnse naam Luna. De grens tussen het verlichte en het onverlichte deel van de maan wordt terminator genoemd. Voor een waarnemer die zich op de maan op de terminator zou bevinden staat de zon op de horizon en gaat onder of komt op. De terminator beweegt langzaam over het maanoppervlak. De terminator heeft een onregelmatig verloop vanwege het bergachtige maanoppervlak. De schaduwen van bv. heuvels en bergen zijn er lang, met als gevolg dat details van het maanoppervlak daar vanaf de aarde goed zichtbaar zijn; een gegeven waar de maanwaarnemers en maanfotografen onder de amateursterrenkundigen dankbaar gebruik van maken.
Gemiddelde afstand tot de aarde: 384.450 km Temperatuur tussen -173 °C en 127 °C.
Een meteoor is een kortstondig lichtspoor aan de hemel dat men ziet wanneer een klein stofdeeltje op ca. 100 km hoogte met een enorme snelheid in de atmosfeer van de Aarde terecht komt. Een deeltje ter grootte van een erwt geeft al een bijzonder heldere lichtstreep.

Embedded in the splendid landscape of the Ardennes, Vianden hat tourist tradition for more than a hundred years. Like the famous French poet Victor Hugo, thousands of visitors are charmed each year by the narrow and paved lanes, the gothic churches, the ramparts and fortified towers of the small medieval town, dominated by the magnificent, restored castle Vianden. Meanwhile, well-maintained tracks, offering spectacular panoramic views.

Artistic expression in 1894

The origin of the trend called Ecole de Nancy "School of Nancy" is to be found around Nancy. This new artistic expression in 1894 was applied to architecture with civil buildings such as the Chamber of Commerce, villas such as the Majorelle Villa, garden suburb, and to the decorative arts.

In 1765, Stanislas gave orders for royal plant nurseries to be laid out along the city’s ramparts. Originally created to raise trees to be planted along the main roads in Lorraine, it consists of 16 beds. In 1835 the royal nurseries were transformed into a public park, but the original layout was retained.
Today, it is a 50-acre park in the heart of Nancy, a source of oxygen for the city and a perfect place for a stroll or just lying on the grass...

Cathedrale of Nancy

The Cathedrale of Nancy was designed by the architects Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Germain Boffrand, it was built at the start of the 18thC. The railings are by Jean Lamour; the cupola was painted by Jacquard and the organ is a scheduled monument. It has several interesting 17th and 18thC paintings of the Lorraine School.

Nancy is the capital of the Lorraine's region, and is situated on the banks of the Meurthe river. Its sumptuous Place Stanislas, old town, fountains and iron gates are but a few of the many attractions of this lively and friendly city. The birth place of Art Nouveau, Nancy remains firmly an European cultural center with a very large student population.

Place Stanislas is considered the most beautiful royal square in Europe and high point of Nancy’s outstanding collection of 18thC monuments, on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the city of Nancy is known all over the world thanks to Place Stanislas. A magnificent example of Classical French architecture built by Emmanuel Héré, it is surrounded by the wrought-iron worker Jean Lamour’s finely worked railings with gold highlights. The Square’s majestic fountains are by Barthélemy Guibal. Famous buildings surrounding the square include the City Hall, the Theatre-Opera House, the Fine Arts Museum...

De meeste Nederlanders zijn onbekend met Nancy. Voor hen is het veelal niet meer dan een naam op de verkeersborden, samen met Metz; een onbeduidend teken op weg naar het Zuiden. Wanneer over twee jaar de TGV in anderhalf uur van Parijs naar Nancy rijdt, stelt de stad zich nog verder open. Het nieuwe elan van Nancy gaat gepaard met een groeiende trots op het eigen verleden, voorop de achttiende eeuw, de tijd van de Verlichting. Een Poolse koning zonder land gaf de stad destijds zijn hart, het historische centrum dat in het afgelopen jaar oogverblindend mooi is gerestaureerd. Maar veruit de meeste inwoners zijn trots op hun ‘Place Stan’, zoals zij het Place Stanislas liefkozend noemen. Dat is schitterend gerenoveerd én het is voetgangersgebied geworden – een stap in de richting van het verleden én de toekomst.

Fun in Lyon

Breathtaking coastline of Wales

The beautiful Vale of Glamorgan is characterised by green rolling hills, historic towns, pretty villages and a splendid natural coastline. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast stretches for 14 miles, from Aberthaw in the east to Porthcawl in the west. Dramatic plunging cliffs, tiny secluded coves and breathtaking views make the Heritage Coast area a must for walkers and cyclists, or anyone with a love of the countryside.
By far the best way to explore this remote and beautiful coastline is on foot.

Geen strandtent, geen ijsjes, geen parkeerplaats. Perfect!

Ten westen van Cardiff bieden de rustige, groene velden van de Glamorgan Coast & Countryside een perfecte ontsnapping. Deze baai is zonder twijfel één van de mooiste stranden van Groot-Brittannië. Het strand is alleen bereikbaar via een steil rotspad, gevolgd door een stevige wandeling. je loopt over de heuvel en het ‘geheim’, deze verstopte baai met turquoise water, brengt je letterlijk tot stilstand.
