The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a panoramic road in Austria. The most famous route through the Alps ends just before the jewel in the Hohe Tauern national park's crown: the highest mountain and the largest glacier in Austria, the Großglockner 3.798 m and its glacier, the Pasterze. You will have a driving and nature experience of a special kind on 48 kilometres of high alpine road with 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres! You pass through a unique world of mountains with blossoming alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests, massive cliffs and eternal ice to the foot of the Grossglockner, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. The route is described in the brochure as a Bikers Heaven. The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße Road was built between 1930 and 1935, to fight unemployment and boost tourism in Salzburg. It is in within the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Closed in winter until end of October to beginning of May.

The Mooserboden is a valley basin, which was formed by the Glacier Pasterze. The basin collects the meltwater of the glacier Pasterze. Eventually the water will pass through the main Alpine ridge to the Möll river eventually into the Danube - Donau river.

De 47,8 km lange weg leidt middenin het Hohe Tauern National Park naar de hoogste berg van Oostenrijk, de Großglockner 3.798m en zijn gletsjer, de Pasterze. De Pasterzegletsjer is wel 10 km lang en heeft een oppervlakte van bijna 20 m2. De Großglockner Alpenstraße voert je door een wild en rotsachtig landschap. Maar liefst 36 haarspeldbochten zorgen ervoor dat je uiteindelijk tot een hoogte van 2.504 meter stijgt. Tijdens de rit wordt je getrakteerd op adembenemende uitzichten. Ook kun je genieten van de aanblik van enkele honderden bergtoppen van boven de 3.000 meter. Twee kilometer voor de Grossglockner onder het einde van de gletsjer Pasterze ligt de emerald groene Margaritze Stuwmeer. Deze Stausee is een dam, die wordt gevoed door het smeltwater van de gletsjer Pasterze. Onderweg op de Großglockner Alpenstraße kun je eventueel stoppen bij verschillende uitzichtplaatsen en informatiepunten. Voor kinderen zijn er speeltuintjes en ook is het mogelijk om in echte sneeuw te spelen. Er zijn tevens 2 kabelbanen die je de mogelijkheid bieden om nog meer van de mooie omgeving te bekijken.

The Alpine Chough pairs for life and displays fidelity to its breeding site, which is usually crevice in a cliff face. It feeds, usually in flocks, on short grazed grassland, taking mainly invertebrate prey in summer and fruit in winter; it will readily approach tourist sites to find supplementary food.

You can enjoy a truly breathtaking view of the Großglockner and the other mountains. Here you can enjoy snow up high in the mountains. It is best to plan your trip if the sky is blue and you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view. It is an impressive natural experience for many people: size and power can be felt here, one is subject to the fascination of the eternal ice and the elemental force of nature. The flight of three Alpine Chough is swift and acrobatic with loose deep wing beats. Their high manoeuvrability is accomplished by fanning the tail, folding its wings, and soaring in the updraughts at cliff faces. They circle around just a few feet away. It's pleasure to watch these buoyant acrobatic flyers high up in the mountains.

This makes it, after Mont Blanc, the second most prominent mountain in the Alps. The Pasterze, at 9 kilometers in length, is the longest glacier in Austria. It lies within the Hohe Tauern mountain range in Carinthia, directly beneath the Grossglockner. Its volume diminished by half since the first measurements in 1856. The Pasterze can be reached via the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. This road is the most beautiful panoramic road in Austria, in the state of Salzburg. The Grossglockner and Pasterze Glacier have been owned by the Austrian Alpine Association since 1918. The Grossglockner is a playground for trained ice climbers. Some of the most difficult routes are at the north face. It's a 2 days climb programme. It takes approx. 6-8 hours to reach the top of the Grossglockner. The characteristically pyramid-shaped peak actually consists of two pinnacles, the Großglockner and the Kleinglockner (klein means "small" in German), separated by a saddle-like formation known as the Glocknerscharte. The route is more difficult than many other major mountains of the alps. From the Erzherzog-Johann-hut you have to cope with a 35-40 degree steep slope.

On the Kaiser-Franz-Josfs-Höhe you find a unique panorama trail high above the impressive glacier tongue of the Pasterze. In several tunnels at the beginning of the trail you are invited to experience the mystical world of the mountain. Het uitzichtpunt heeft zijn naam gekregen toen Keizer Franz-Josef en Elisabeth van Oostenrijk-Hongarije beter bekend als Sisi een bezoek brachten aan het uitzichtpunt in 1856. De vorst wilde graag de Pasterze zien en liep met zijn gevolg vier uur lang vanuit Heiligenblut om het punt te bereiken. Jaarlijks komen hier bijna een miljoen bezoekers. Boven de gletsjer is op 3463 m hoogte de Johannisberg te zien, één van de bergtoppen van de Großglocknergroep. Er naast ligt de Sonnenwelleck 3261 m en de hoogste top, de Großglockner van 3798 m. De gletsjerbodem is per trap of lift te bereiken. Het lopen over de gletsjer met zijn vele spleten is een unieke ervaring. We wandelen een groot gedeelte van de Gamsgrubenweg. Hierboven een foto van BieJee, Samantha en Kanitha. We komen net uit de tunnel. De Gamsgrubenweg loopt door een aantal tunnels, en als je uit de tunnel komt heb je een fantastisch uitzicht op de gletsjer. In sommige tunnels is mooie verlichting en ook muziek. Soms klinkt het behoorlijk griezelig.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a panoramic road in Austria. The most famous route through the Alps ends just before the jewel in the Hohe Tauern national park's crown: the highest mountain and the largest glacier in Austria, the Großglockner 3.798 m and its glacier, the Pasterze. You will have a driving and nature experience of a special kind on 48 kilometres of high alpine road with 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres! You pass through a unique world of mountains with blossoming alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests, massive cliffs and eternal ice to the foot of the Grossglockner, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. The route is described in the brochure as a Bikers Heaven. The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße Road was built between 1930 and 1935, to fight unemployment and boost tourism in Salzburg. It is in within the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Closed in winter until end of October to beginning of May.

The Margaritze is a valley basin, which was formed by the Glacier Pasterze. It lies below the Glockner house, the detour of the Grossglockner road to Franz Joseph's height, at the Glacier road and is about 2 km below the end of the Pasterze. The basin collects the meltwater of the glacier Pasterze.

De 47,8 km lange weg leidt middenin het Hohe Tauern National Park naar de hoogste berg van Oostenrijk, de Großglockner 3.798m en zijn gletsjer, de Pasterze. De Pasterzegletsjer is wel 10 km lang en heeft een oppervlakte van bijna 20 m2. De Großglockner Alpenstraße voert je door een wild en rotsachtig landschap. Maar liefst 36 haarspeldbochten zorgen ervoor dat je uiteindelijk tot een hoogte van 2.504 meter stijgt. Tijdens de rit wordt je getrakteerd op adembenemende uitzichten. Ook kun je genieten van de aanblik van enkele honderden bergtoppen van boven de 3.000 meter. Twee kilometer voor de Grossglockner onder het einde van de gletsjer Pasterze ligt de emerald groene Margaritze Stausee. Deze Stausee is een dam, die wordt gevoed door het smeltwater van de gletsjer Pasterze. Naast dit stuwmeer ligt een prachtige Kapel. Onderweg op de Großglockner Alpenstraße kun je eventueel stoppen bij verschillende uitzichtplaatsen en informatiepunten. Voor kinderen zijn er speeltuintjes en ook is het mogelijk om in echte sneeuw te spelen. Er zijn tevens 2 kabelbanen die je de mogelijkheid bieden om nog meer van de mooie omgeving te bekijken.
