View from Jagger Museum over the Kilauea Crater, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Recent activity on Kilauea, the Halema'uma'u Crater Vent has been blowing out tons of toxic gasses - at times an estimation of over 10 times than normal (USGS updates). At night, lava and superheated gasses light up the toxic cloud spewing from the vent (for perspective, the vent itself is nearly 30m across). At times, the vent could be heard as it literally breathed and pulsated. Depending upon the winds, the effects of this gas cloud could be seen locally and across the islands: from the closing of roads within the park (and the closure of the park itself a few weeks ago), to evacuations of nearby towns, to air quality in and around the Hawaiian Islands, most notably in Kona, where a large amount of 'vog' hovered over the city.

This image was taken around 11pm from the observation deck at Jagger Museum, approximately a 3 minute exposure, the moon lit up the barren landscape and gas plume.

Sunset over the Southern Sierra Nevada and the Great Western Divide, Sequoia National Park. Taken this past weekend near Panther Gap on a short solo snow camping trip. Panther Gap has an amazing view toward the high peaks of the western Sierra Nevada, and only 3-4 miles from the trailhead it makes a very nice destination for a short weekend getaway.

Sunrise from Greenstone Lake. Finally got my film developed from this trip over a month ago. This is a similar shot to one I posted a while back. But with my film camera, 17mm is actually 17mm so this is a wider angle than the previous. Canon, 17-40mm f4.0L Fuji Velvia

North Peak reflecting in Greenstone Lake at sunrise, Hoover Wilderness in the High Sierra - just east of Yosemite National Park. A very short hike to this lake for camp, and we witnessed one of the most amazing sunsets. This sunrise had an eerie feeling to it as the clouds loomed overhead, dropping a few sprinkles.

Few times do we get to see a sunset like this. Not knowing what would happen an hour earlier as the storm clouds floated past, I wandered toward the outlet of Greenstone Lake in the Hoover Wilderness of the High Sierra when suddenly everything lit up in a remarkable glow of light. Taken from Greenstone Lake, Hoover Wilderness, Inyo National Forest. Canon 350D, 17-40mm f4.0L at f11, 6" exposure. gnd filter.

Sunset in Kaweah Basin, Sequoia National Park. Mt. Kaweah is located in the center. Untrailed and located several days from the nearest trailhead, the most technically challenging thing about this shot was actually getting there. But it was certainly worth every step! Black Bear spotted close to the road in Yosemite National Park. Moments earlier I saw this bear in a meadow along the road in perfect light. By the time I parked and went back to photograph it, it was laying down in the woods off to the side of the meadow in the shade. It watched me for a while, then got up to wander off. I was able to get some photos as it watched me curiously. Canon 350D, 70-200mm f4.0 with 1.4x extender

On a backpacking trip this last weekend, this shot was taken near the outlet of Minaret Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Just a stunning area to spend a few days alone with only the wind and calls of coyotes to listen to. This was one of those times I just stood in a trance soaking up everything around me. I sat at this location for hours watching the light fade.Canon 350D, 17-40mm f4.0L at 17mm and f11, iso100, 0.3". Polarizer + 3-stop hard gnd.

Minaret Lake

Sunrise near the outlet of Minaret Lake, Ansel Adams Wilderness. On a 3 day solo trip to the base of the Minarets I saw only two other dayhikers. Coyotes serenaded me at night and watched me during the day, and nothing to do but listen to the wind, smell the alpine air, feel the mountain land, and watch nature. Sunset from near Prewitt Ridge, high above the Big Sur Coast. Taken near camp. A long and windy drive up Nacamiento-Ferguson Road, followed by another long, windy, and dusty drive down coast ridge road leads to Prewitt Ridge Road. A warm winter morning at ten thousand feet, Hilton Creek Lakes, John Muir Wilderness. Fuji Velvia film. I find these frozen lakes and snowfields so difficult to photograph, sometimes its just easier to put down the camera and soak up the view.

Winter at the Hilton

Hilton Creek Lakes in the John Muir Wilderness, Inyo National Forest. I skied up the day before and camped just behind where I took this photo. After watching a beautiful sunrise alpenglow creep across the landscape, I sat down to a cup of coffee to watch this beautiful scene and warm up in the sun. A few seconds after this photo was taken, I heard a coyote howling in the nearby woods. Canon rebelxt 350D, 17-40mm f4.0L at f9.0, 1/200. I stacked two gnd filters for this shot - a 2-stop hard for the top and then inverted a 3-stop soft to expose the foreground.

A late night arriving at Mono Lake after a long drive, I walked down to the shoreline to stretch my legs. Ended up staring, gazing, and wandering for several hours in the cold winter night. An amazing experience, watching the moon rise from along the shores. This was taken at about 1am, 2 minute exposure, canon 350D, 17-40mm at f4.0, iso400. The streaks on the water were from small waves along the lake which distorted the reflection of the stars.

Sunrise at Mono Lake, Inyo National Forest. There is something about this area that strikes me - the sights, the sounds, the smells - the only word I can think of is magical. Backdropped by the winter scene of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, I can sit and stare at this view for a long time...and I did.

Coyote alongside the road in Sequoia National Park. This fella was waiting alongside the highway, hoping the tourists stopping to watch would toss some food its way. And yes, one family actually did...tisk tisk. When I reviewed this photo after I got home, I noticed the way the coyote looked somewhat as though it was in mid yelp/bark, but the rest of its body language seems to give away the fact that this is a mid-yawn shot.

Kaweah Peaks from Kaweah Basin in the early morning twilight, Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park.

I have dreamed of visiting this place for almost ten years now, and have been turned back twice short of my goal in the past. Needless to say these facts made it even that much more special to finally achieve my destination.

No trails penetrate this basin, and being nearly 3 days from the nearest trailhead (depending on how fast you hike and climb) this area gets very few visitors. As such, it was remarkable how pristine it was - nary a sign of human presence throughout the basin - I was alone for miles in every direction. It took over 2 long days to reach this area, where I spent almost 4 days exploring the surrounding areas without seeing another person. An experience I will never forget. Canon 350D, 17-40mm f4.0L at f10, iso100, 2.5". 2-stop hard gnd.
