Newbridge is a town in County Kildare, Ireland. Its population of 21,561 (2011 Census) making it the largest town in County Kildare and the 15th. largest in Ireland.

The town is located on the banks of the River Liffey, which provides a range of natural amenities. Upriver are towns such as Athgarvan, Kilcullen and Blessington, while downriver are the towns of Caragh, Clane and Celbridge.

Newbridge is bounded by the Curragh Plains to the west, Pollardstown Fen and the Bog of Allen and Moulds Bog to the north west. Around the Curragh, and to the east are many important stud farms.

To the south the motorway now forms a boundary to the town.

Today Newbridge is a thriving town with a population approaching 21,661, a major centre for industry and commerce, within the South Kildare region.

Until recently this area of Dublin was full of Asian restaurants (mainly Chinese) but since the beginning of the month a number of them have closed.

Dublin City Council has made a number of attempts to upgrade this area but usually after any work has been completed the area rapidly declines because of serious anti-social behaviour.

The area is known for the historical Horse market which is held on every first Sunday of the month.

However, the city council is continuing with its efforts of trying to move the centuries-old horse market out of the area, with many new residents to the area, including those from the facing Smithfield Market apartments, especially uncomfortable with its atmosphere, noise, perceptions of animal abuse and neglect, and occasional bouts of violence amongst a minority of animal traders, although a discreet police (Garda) presence helps to maintain order. Although the Smithfield Horse Fair continues to draw heavy and sustained criticism from a wide range of sources, including An Garda Siochana, and the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), legal difficulties in closing down and/or moving away the market, coupled with its centuries-old heritage, have left the city council and the horse fair defenders locked in an ongoing battle without any clear resolution ahead.

Prior to Irish Independence, most towns throughout the country had places of detention, or Bridewells as they were called. During the War of Independence and the Civil War these buildings, regarded by the population as symbols of repression were destroyed. Today, only two Bridewells, those of the cities of Cork and Dublin, are in use today. The Bridewell in Tarbert, County Kerry, has recently been restored and turned into a heritage centre.
