I like when traveling on a road trip, away from the main routes, and seemingly in the middle of nowhere, there is always a little place that will sell you a beer!. This thirsty little spot is on route 359 in Realitos, Texas. I like America and all that it offers, this is just one little reason why...:-)

Bourbon Street in the French Quarter even comes with it's own Laundromat. This is the Washing Well located at 841 on this famed street in New Orleans..

I never tire of the Architecture this city offers!!!

Soda Shop

This is the soda shop from the Royal Pharmacy located in the French Quarter of New Orleans. All visitors to Louisiana and especially New Orleans know the photographic opportunities there never end. Because of this and the wonderful friends we have made in New Orleans and Baton Rouge over the years, we are planning another road trip to Louisiana in late September this year.

So if you have always wanted to visit New Orleans and haven't done so, why not plan to meet up with my good friend and road trip partner Jim and myself this September, it will be a lot of fun!!

This is a typical cell at Alcatraz prison. It measured a mere 5' by 9' much smaller than the standards of a prison today.
However, I have to say I have had many hotel rooms on Manhattan Island NY that weren't much bigger..:-)

This is a view from within one of the hospital wards at Alcatraz Prison in San Fransisco Harbor. Much of the prison has been preserved to the period prior to closure in 1963. There is another view below.....

Blue Swallow Motel

This wonderful motel located in Tucumcari New Mexico will take you back in time to when Route 66 was the Main Street of America joining the east with the west. The property has been maintained to it's original era and is a welcome stop for many traveling the Mother Road.

In the photo below you can see each unit has it's own outdoor seating area and garage, I like that!!

Four Friends

As many know, my good friend and fellow Road Tripper Jim Thiessen, and I, recently completed a trip of the entire original Route 66. It was a fascinating drive and one I plan to do again. We were on good roads, poor roads, and in a couple occasions dirt trails with dead ends, but with the use of three Trip Books prepared by CAA/AAA, good maps, and a gps we were able to stay true to the original route. Often navigation was difficult but Jim kept us on track as he processed all the route information as though he had done this before.......oh and I got to say, we had a million laughs along the way.

That is Jim (Steele on flickr) seated in the photo above,... how comfortable he looks surrounded by old friends. Photo taken inside one of the many roadside museums along the route.

Ranch House Cafe

The sign is fading, as are so many of the original roadside cafes and diners located along the famed Route 66. Here the Ranch House, although closed for many years, still stands proudly along the route in Tucumcara New Mexico.

Hoosier School

I went to school here for my first few grades. It is the four room school house built in 1930 in the small town of Hoosier, located in Saskatchewan near the Alberta boarder. When I attended school here only two of the rooms were in use and by the summer of 1966 the school had closed.

I remember the basement had a concrete wall dividing it in half, each side having its own stairway, the left side for the girls and boys on the right...and you didn't want to get caught on the wrong side..!!!
My family moved to Manitoba in the mid 60s where my next school was a One Room School House! There were six little rows of desks for the six grades taught there.
School has changed a lot since then hasn't it.......

Ghosts of Loverna

This is another view from Loverna, a small town in decline, located on the boarder of Alberta and Saskatchewan. As a young lad I always looked forward to attending the rodeo that was a yearly in event in Loverna.

People came from miles around, and the town was a bustle, but the best part of the rodeo was getting a penny for each pop bottle we could find and return....just saying!
