When I visited Flickr HQ almost two months ago (already!) Heather gave me two inflatable beachballs, one blue, one pink (of course). As with several other paired items, my daughter kept one and gave the other to my niece. In this case, the blue beachball made its way back to Seattle, the pink one remained in California.

One cool and not so windy evening we went to the beach to watch the sunset, and my daughter brought the beachball to play with it. One miscalculated kick was enough to send it onto the water... and it quickly drifted out of reach.

The guy in the photo courteously offered to attempt to retrieve it... but to no avail. When he was knee-deep in the cold Sound waters, the ball was already drifting faster out and essentially irretrievable.

What do you tell a child that just lost a loved toy... when they can see it right there and want you to bring it back? How can you bring them to accept that even though it's a short distance away, it's lost forever?

I told her that some day, the ball will drift ashore somewhere, and some child will find it and be happy. I probably didn't sound too convinced myself...

Last photo I took before the pizza arrived. (I skipped a couple of, let's say, "suboptimal" photos.)

Somehow, with giving the talk, chatting and stuff, the next time I picked the camera I was already on the train back and starting to feel seriously sick... but that's another story altogether.

Don't tell me that word doesn't exist. As I type this, google reports 101 hits for it. QED.

In any case, don't think that open space is so innocent as it looks. Projectiles whizz through it at erratic times, but the staff are apparently so used to it they don't even bat an eyelash.
