UK - Oxford - Bridge of Sighs in the snow_mono

The foreground is maybe a bit messy, some nice pristine snow would've been nice but a) I was far too late for that and b) the tracks in the snow create some good lead-in lines which pull the eye under the Bridge of Sighs to the Sheldonian Theatre in the background.

I don't often take photos whilst it's still actually snowing, I prefer for it to stop and then wait for a blue sky. This afternoon however I took the opportunity to take a series of Oxford landmark shots as I felt the snow added a bit of atmosphere.

I've added a little bit of extra saturation but this entrance door to Rhodes House in Oxford did look pretty special in the early evening sunshine.

From Wikipedia : "Rhodes House is part of the University of Oxford in England. It is located on the south of South Parks Road in central Oxford, and was built in memory of Cecil Rhodes, an alumnus of the university and a major benefactor.

The will of Cecil Rhodes (1853–1902) created scholarships that became known as Rhodes Scholarships, administered by the Rhodes Trust.

The Rhodes House building was designed by Sir Herbert Baker in a colonial style and was completed in 1928.

During 1931, Albert Einstein delivered a series of three lectures at Rhodes House. Edmund Bowen, a chemistry don at the university, saved the blackboard used in the second lecture (on 16 May). This can still be seen at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford, formally presented by Sir Francis Wylie, the Warden of Rhodes House at the time.

Rhodes House was the location for one of the gigs of the band Ugly Rumours in the early 1970s, of which former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was a member. The Oxcentrics jazz band also played at Rhodes House."

A square format crop of the glass fins on the sides of the Hawkins/Brown University of Oxford Biochemistry Department. If you're interested in photographing it yourself it's tucked area in the Science Area behind the University Museum.

PS Thanks to everyone that commented and faved my shots yesterday, it was one of my busiest days on Flickr for a while (still didn't make Explore though....).

I prefer the square cropped version of this photo of the University of Oxford Biochemistry Department I uploaded yesterday as an image because it excluded the orange from the frame but I thought I should upload this as it says more about the use of colour by Hawkins/Brown Architects besides being a more 'honest' image.

Detail of the coloured glass fins on the sides of the University of Oxford Biochemistry Department building. The building recently won the 2011 World Architecture News Colour Award and it's not hard to see why.

I thought the original shot of a detail of the University of Oxford Hawkins/Brown design Biochemistry Department Building, copy below, would make for another in my occasional series of flipped images.

Some might say there's a bit too much going on architecturally with the Hawkins/Brown Biochemistry Department building but thankfully it's all very interesting and adds up to a pretty unique building, particularly compared to many of the other buildings in the University of Oxford Science Area.

Not sure if the coloured glass fins on the sides of the Hawkins/Brown designed University of Oxford Biochemistry Department building has a logic to them or if they're entirely random but they certainly make for a distinctive addition to the mostly bland buildings of the Science Area.

Back in Oxford after a (virtual) day at the Cotswold Wildlife Park. This is the Sun reflecting off the glass facade and fins of the Hawkins/Brown designed Biochemistry Building, part of the Science Area of the University of Oxford.

Some more shots to come to make up for not having photographed it despite only being five minutes from my office.

People only vaguely familiar with with Oxford might be surprised to learn there are some great Contemporary buildings arond, they just tend to be tucked away like this new £35 million Kendrew Quad at St Johns College by MJP Architects (formerly MacCormac Jamieson Prichard).

The MJP Architects (formerly MacCormac Jamieson Prichard) designed Kendrew Quad at St Johns College is another Oxford building I'd love to get inside but so far not been able to having missed a couple of opportunities that have come my way.

UK - Oxford - All Souls College in the snow

This shot of All Souls College is possibly my favourite of the three 'famous Oxford landmarks in the snow' series. The snow is bouncing light up under the arch giving it an unusual look compared to my other shots from the same spot.

I've taken similar shots before of the entrance to Oxford Colleges but the striking thing about this shot of Keble College was the symmetry. I just had to wait for a couple of figures to walk into the frame and then press the shutter.

I particularly liked this shot of the Brasenose College entrance on the Radcliffe Square for the way the guy in the red t-shirt is taking the racing line, leaning into the corner, he looks like he's a man who knows where he's going.....

For this shot of Balliol College in Broad Street, Oxford I've not corrected the converging verticals, when I tried it just didn't look quite right. I think that this may be because Broad St being quite wide (clues in the name....) it's not wide enough to ever see this tower in true elevation. Therefore when you see it corrected something tells your brain something wrong. Maybe.
