Hungary - Budapest - Hungarian State Opera House Entrance

One of the grand entrances to the Hungarian State Opera building. It's fair to say it's a pretty amazing piece of architecture but then Opera houses generally seem to be about the most expensive buildings to build. Just ask the city of Hamburg, their 180 million Euro project is currently running closer to 500 million Euros......

Presumably this gateway originally formed the main entrance to the University of Oxford Botanic Gardens, now you enter by the discrete door tucked away next to it.

I hadn't visited the Botanic Gardens in Oxford for many years before I visited several times last Summer when helping organise the Oxford Flickr Group so I took the opportunity to get some shots.

Bab Agnaou is one of the most impressive gates in the city walls of Marrakesh therefore it was an obvious choice of backdrop for some people shots. I took quite a few but don't worry, I'll only be uploading the best ones.

I think I might have said I'd finished uploading photos of the famous blue villa at the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh. It would seem I may have been mistaken, at least partly as one of yesterdays shots is currently in Explore so it would seem the Magic Donkey must like them afterall......

The doors of the Villa at the Jardin Majorellein Marrakesh varied considerably in width but all featured the same strikingly coloured design.

A wonderful example of traditional craftsmanship on display in the Marrakesh Museum. It would be possible to spend days photographing details such as this in Marrakech but as ever on these trips we're always a bit rushed as there's always so much to fit in. Even within this shot I can now see several other possible shots I could have taken.....

This shot caught my eye for it's colours, composition and textures. It's the entrance to the Dar Bellarj, a former Stork hospital, now a Traditional arts and crafts centre.

Detail of the beautiful entrance door to the Dar Bellarj, a former Stork Hospital turned Arts and Crafts Centre almost adjacent to the Ben Youssef Medersa in the Northern Medina of Marrakech. Here the strong top lighting has worked in my favour bringing out all the detail.

If I'm honest I thought I'd see more of this kind of beaten metalwork throughout the city given it's strong craft tradition but maybe it's all hidden away inside the private Riads.

Looking back from inside the courtyard at the main tourist entrance to Blenheim Palace. Can I detect an almost Egyptian influence in the architecture here or am I alone in that thought ?

I've taken similar shots before of the entrance to Oxford Colleges but the striking thing about this shot of Keble College was the symmetry. I just had to wait for a couple of figures to walk into the frame and then press the shutter.

As we were leaving Blenheim late on a mid-November afternoon I noticed this beautiful light (well, it was hard not too...) and used this archway to frame a shot of the courtyard beyond.

Taken at Blenheim Palace mid November last year, the Christmas trees were already up awaiting decoration. By early December the Palace is bedecked in tinsel and baubles (albeit posh ones) and is well worth a visit.

I particularly liked this shot of the Brasenose College entrance on the Radcliffe Square for the way the guy in the red t-shirt is taking the racing line, leaning into the corner, he looks like he's a man who knows where he's going.....

It proved a bit of a faff to get tickets to visit the Hungarian Parliament Building but it was well worth it, it's not exactly to my taste architecturally but it's an amazing building nevertheless.

From Wikipedia : "Budapest was united from three cities in 1873 and seven years later the diet resolved to establish a new, representative Parliament Building, expressing the sovereignty of the nation. An international competition was held, and Imre Steindl emerged as the victor; the plans of two other competitors were later also realized in the form of the Ethnographical Museum and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, both of which face the Parliament Building. Construction from the winning plan was started in 1885 and the building was inaugurated on the 1000th anniversary of the country in 1896, and completed in 1904. (The architect of the building went blind before its completion.)

About one thousand people were involved in construction, during which 40 million bricks, half a million precious stones and 40 kilograms (88 lb) of gold were used. After World War II the diet became single-chambered and today the government uses only a small portion of the building. During the communist regime a red star perched on the top of the dome, but was removed in 1990. Mátyás Szűrös declared the Hungarian Republic from the balcony facing Lajos Kossuth Square on 23 October 1989."

Bab Agnaou, one of the gates that give pedestrian only access (well, pedestrians, bikes, mopeds, donkey carts etc) into the Medina of Marrakech. From this angle the detail of the architecture is more apparent.

Recently I was asked if I had any photos of 10 Downing Street as one was needed for a Theatre production, given members of the public can't get nearer that about 50 metres away they were pleasantly surprised when I dug this shot out of the archives. It's about 15 years old and scanned from a negative so fingers crossed it's good enough for their intended use.

I spent my second day in the Olympic Park yesterday and had pretty much perfect conditions for photography, so you can expect plenty more photos to come. I'll have to get and upload them quick, the Closing Ceremony is tonight and then no-one will be interested in them though....

From Wikipedia : "Orbit was designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond of engineering Group Arup. Announced on 31 March 2010, it was expected to be completed by December 2011. The project came about after Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell decided in 2008 that the Olympic Park needed "something extra". Designers were asked for ideas for an "Olympic tower" at least 100 metres (330 ft) high, and Orbit was the unanimous choice from proposals considered by a nine-person advisory panel.

The project was expected to cost £19.1 million, with £16 million coming from Britain's richest man, the steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman of the ArcelorMittal steel company, and the balance of £3.1 million coming from the London Development Agency. The name "ArcelorMittal Orbit" combines the name of Mittal's company, as chief sponsor, with "Orbit", the original working title for Kapoor and Balmond's design.

Kapoor and Balmond believe that Orbit represents a radical advance in the architectural field of combining sculpture and structural engineering, and that it combines both stability and instability in a work that visitors can engage with and experience via an incorporated spiral walkway. It has been both praised and criticised for its bold design. It has also been criticised as a vanity project, of questionable lasting use or merit as a public art project."

For this shot of Balliol College in Broad Street, Oxford I've not corrected the converging verticals, when I tried it just didn't look quite right. I think that this may be because Broad St being quite wide (clues in the name....) it's not wide enough to ever see this tower in true elevation. Therefore when you see it corrected something tells your brain something wrong. Maybe.
