The kid in me got a thrill by riding in a Sound Transit hi-railer on a short section of the eastside rail corridor in the Kennydale neighborhood of Renton. That corridor contains a rail line partially abandoned by BNSF. It runs northward from Renton to Snohomish.

Two hi-railers were present to give rides to persons at a celebration marking the finalization of purchase of the corridor. The other hi-railer belonged to BNSF. The celebration took place at the Seahawks Training Center, whose main building is visible at left. Passage through the overhrown grade was noisy---the trees and plants vigorously brushed the underside of the vehicle.

A southbound BNSF freight train rounds the bend at Allentown, just north of Black River Junction. My vantage point was at the center of this WikiMapia aerial view and I was looking northwest. The building at left is a rendering plant owned by Baker Commodities, Inc. The road at far right is Monster Road (yes, that's its name).

This was taken in 2004. Back then, the curving track in the foreground was used by BNSF's Maltby Turn to enter Black River Junction on its way from Seattle to Renton, Bellevue, etc. Since then, the area has been re-built with several straight tracks running parallel to the main tracks at left. The aerial views show this. Now trains going to Renton come down a track at far right to enter the junction.

Looking south from Kelbaker Road at Route 66 and a westbound BNSF train. Seeing the train got me excited (I am easily amused), so I chased it to Amboy, where I photographed it again. It was a long train!

A westbound BNSF stack train, carrying J.B. Hunt containers, passes the Fullerton Amtrak station. The rain was a turn-off but produced some nice views.

This signal bungalow near Black River Junction is part of an upgrade of the signals here in conjunction with track re-building. The track work was done to accommodate commuter trains. (Thanks to DW Honan for providing the terminology.)

I drove to the Fullerton AMTRAK station to meet Flickr member El Roco Photography (formerly Holloran Grade), a frequent visitor there. Before he arrived I roamed around in the rain, taking pictures like this one. Taken from the pedestrian bridge over the tracks.

Stack train at the north end of BNSF's South Seattle Yard.

Interesting bit: the Yahoo Maps imagery as of October 2010 shows a small plane directly above the train's position. The plane was on final approach to Boeing Field. The plane does not show up in the higher-quality Google Earth imagery.

A BNSF trailer train ascends the grade toward the Tehachapi Loop, just south of Keene, California. Just five minutes earlier I was at the Loop, hoping a train would come by. I got tired of waiting and headed for the freeway interchange at Keene to drive to Tehachapi and US 395. As I came down Woodford-Tehachapi Road on the way to Keene, this train appeared. If I had waited a few more minutes I would have seen it at the Loop. That was my dose of irony for the day.

At bottom right is the head of a railfan that had been waiting for some train action.

Looking WNW from the Commonwealth Avenue underpass (at the center of this WikiMapia aerial view). I think this is CP Basta. Holloran Grade can confirm or correct that.

I drove to Fullerton to see Holloran Grade. Before meeting him at the Fullerton AMTRAK station, I shot this.

An eastbound BNSF intermodal train ascends the grade through the U-curve in Lynch Coulee, southeast of Wenatchee. In twenty or so minutes it will reach the top and cruise through Quincy. Then on to Spokane and points east. At the apex of the curve is a huge fill (dark stones)
