The male Crimson Sunbird returning to its nest to feed his hungry young with a spider in its bill and displaying its hard-to-see yellow rump.
Adult Sunbirds do not usually feed on insects. The parents however would feed their young with insects, lots of them during the first week of their life for the extra protein needed for rapid growth.
The sooner the fledging leave the nest the safer it will be.

All the while I was looking out for that ‘man thing’ to appear from behind but it was nowhere to be found. I was wondering how do they do it?
It goes like this…. The male does not possess a penis as most male birds don’t
Instead both sexes possess a special organ known as a cloaca. When they get into position as seen above, their cloacas are pressed together and the sperm is transfer from the male to the female, in a fraction of a second !! This action is called a cloacal kiss. The pair would repeat the process numerous times throughout the day for many days. I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy doing that, but for a bird it’s all about quantity and not quality
However the female will be awarded with a berry after each intense session.
When the male runs out of berries he would then quickly looks for more in preparation for the next round of excitment. Notice the female hunch forward to facilitate the process while the male on top of her desperately trying to attach his organ to hers.
Just imagine you have to do it with a mouthfull of melons, balance delicately on her back, on top of a tree doing the aiming....all roll into one....I give up...

The nest building process is done entirely by the female.
Seen here fetching back nesting materials to refine her nest.
Once the nest is fully completed and she is totally satisfied with it. She will contact her mate
and they will kick start the mating process Just how often and intense is the mating is anyone's guess.
She would return to lay her fertilised eggs(1 or 2) about a week later. The incupation would take another week to complete. She would take short meal and toilet breaks in between and sometimes to socialise with friends.
Once the chicks have hatched, she would quickly make contact with her husband and both of them would take turns to feed the youngs until they are ready to fledge in about 2 to 3 weeks.
They kiss each other goodbye and fly away(may not
be true)
