Carlsbad flower fields were in full bloom. Acres and acres of flowers on a hill over looking the Pacific Ocean with a windmill in the distance...it was worth the hike even if I only had my pocket camera with me.

Peering out through the plexiglass on the deck of Ray's Boathouse, I felt a little giddy. Was it the outrageously good wild salmon paired with the perfect wine? No. Was it the spectacularly warm air on the long summer evening? No. It was something special, a little rare. It was the perfect storm...in a positive way. I found myself in the perfect spot, on a perfectly clear day, at the perfect time. A rare happening indeed. The mountains across the Puget are seldom visible because of the mist. I felt like a gift had just been dropped in my lap! No way was I going to let this opportunity pass me by. I knew I would be making a bit of a spectacle, but at the moment, I didn't care. I needed a clear shot and a "tripod", so I stood up from my table camera in hand, and tossed the strap around my neck. Then I carefully rested it on the top edge of the plexiglass...the only thing between us and the water. I took my time setting up my shot but not so long as to lose the light. As I clicked, I had a sense of capturing something special. Oh, I know there are lots of these types of shots out there that are 'oh so good', but this one was mine. In my camera. I knew I would probably not get this same opportunity again and the sense of satisfaction was of that...only a fellow photographer would know.

This place gets under my skin...haunting, solemn, peaceful, stately, proud. The ground in front of the rickety fence houses the graves of the brave souls who fought and died in the battle of Franklin. The fence has since been replaced with a more polished wrought iron with gold tips. I like the old one...full of character, real, vulnerable, trying valiantly to do its job.

I don't know what sane person goes on vacation and then sets their alarm to go off at 5:30 am, but being the insane romantic that I am, that's exactly what I did. I couldn't help thinking that if I made the effort, there would be a reward at the other end...and there was. A fantastic sand sculpture with the rising sun over it, and I had it all to myself, at least for a few minutes.

Atalaya sits directly on the coast of South Carolina near Myrtle Beach. Just on the other side of the Castle is the beach...a beautiful setting. Stories are told that Pirates used this coast as a landing place to enter the coast by stealth.

Can't really recall any ghost tales of this particular building, but in Historic Franklin, there are numerous tales and sightings of spirits. And like many other haunted cities, they have a weekly ghost walk (tour), for those strong of heart.

I love the play of light on the dunes and the long shadows on the sand, as the sun sinks low into the sky. But I find myself always thinking the same thing...I wish the light could last a little longer, I wish there was a little more time to enjoy the warmth of the sun. Then, I look forward to rising early the next day to capture every ray of sunlight I can get!

After the rain, the reflections were awesome, just like a mirror. It made the beach feel even more like a massive expanse that could swallow you up.
