Not exactly a temple though.

Considering that I live here, I haven't posted anything from Scotland for about 3 months. I'm not getting out much just now, mainly saving my pennies for family holidays and a forthcoming photography trip. Oh, and other small necessities like food, clothing, heating, etc.

The Olympic Torch

I happened to be in Penrith when the Olympic Torch was running through.

The crowds were immense and I was lucky to get a vantage point (sorry for the damaged flowers, Penrith). Everyone waited patiently for an hour before it arrived, cheered loudly as it approached, then suddenly it was past and gone. Still, we got lots of photos of each other.

As a change from the last two years when we went to Oban on the west coast for the Easter holidays, we decided to try the Cairngorms and Aviemore this year. Needless to say, the weather was warm and sunny on the west, and cold, hazy and overcast where we were, which meant next to no landscape photography.

However, this meant that my full attention was with my family, and what a great time we had. School holidays are now about entertaining a small child for two weeks which in Kathryn's case turned out to be quite easy. We visited this 1930s school at the Highland Folk Museum and she refused to leave until she had finished her written work as set out by the stern teacher. She got 8 out of 10 which was remarkably better than her Dad who was given lines for drawing a rude face on his sheet. Some things never change.

Warning: Geeky photography stuff to follow.

I've been increasingly concerned recently that almost all of my photos are taken with my favourite lens, the Sigma 10-20mm. It may make for good photographs but there is a risk that my photography starts looking the same.

My other lenses for general walkabout usage are the 18-70mm and the 70-300mm VR. The telephoto is a big brute which may impress the little point-and-shoot girlies but brings on back pain after a long day. As for the other lens, it's hardly out of the bag.

So I recently decided to sell both lenses on Ebay and got myself the 18-200mm VR. Now I have a new concern. I may never have this one off the camera.

I love it. It just works on every level, like a perfect cup of tea. And the VR (vibration reduction) even manages to make a fast moving daughter look sharp. For Nikon owners, I highly recommend this lens. For Canon owners, my deepest sympathy.
