Shooting notes: This is the sharpest 25mm ever made so focus on the eyes, the rest is easy.

Processing notes: It’s always nice to oversaturate the image before going into a black and white processor so that the tone separation is increased. Kabuta has a nice filter that will desaturate and merge skintones.

Andrei is shooting a Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 loaded with ISO 3200 black and white film.

The frameing is off (cut off too much of the top). The man just won’t stand still.

Dodged his clothing, Lots of grain added, ISO 320 on this camera isn’t this bad. ;-) Also burned the left edge: I don’t want you going there!

My camera can see in the dark!

Postprocessing: It turns out the orange filter brings out the face (I set my camera defaults on green, but maybe I should use yellow). Another tip I found is that I no longer bother smart-filtering the denoise—saves processing time.

Marie is practicing using my camera.

In order to get some contrast between me and the background, I used the green filter (not the most flattering filter) which caused me and some of the highlights to have too much structure. A couple control points fixed that. Since Marie put the framing around the focusing point, it made sense to add a huge vignette to draw focus.

Before we got in, Marie met a friend and I spent my time taking photos of their new dog.

Postprocessing: I’m not 100% sure what filters I used for this because when you edit with BorderFX’s beta “Edit With…” feature, you lose the original. If you make a copy of it before editing, work with it, and then delete the copy, you still lose the original! The former sounds like a bug with BorderFX, but the latter is a bug with Aperture.

Ryan Hupfer and Stephanie Marnitz help me get the attention of their pug, Frank. You try manually focusing when the depth of field is measured in inches. :-P

Postprocessing: I think Leicas shoot best as grainy black and whites with a lot of vignetting. Since it’s a black and white, Silver Efex contrast vignetting is really good.
