Wonderful getaway to the countryside in Quebec to see old friends of mine. Very cold, deep snow, and so there was nothing for it but a session 'en raquette', or a session on snowshoes. Great way to cut through the calories we'd consumed. Happy New Year!

I can't believe my parents kept all of the letters I sent them. These are from my days teaching abroad, in Czechoslovakia, in Thailand, Beijing, and from Viet Nam. During the Nam days we were able to use email more frequently, and so I sent fewer paper letters. Kind of a lost art, I think, writing letters and cards by hand. Good old days. Can't wait to read these.

I was leaf-kicking, and trying to take photos of foliage, but it was mostly cloudy today. Then I spotted officers from the Toronto Mounted Police unit, exercising their mounts on the football pitch. They then took them into a golden grove, to work them around trees. Glad I was there at the right time. #Explored.

There are at least two of these carvings in the park. Reminds me of the apple trees in The Wizard of Oz.

I forgot about this one. I've always loved the bronze sculpture outside Union Station. It was being renovated as part of station improvement for a long time. I guess it's cliche, in a sense, as a figure at one of the gateways to the city, but I still like it. This was at the end of April.

Went to only one visit in the Doors Open TO annual www.toronto.ca/doorsopen2012/. I'd never been to the observation deck on the 25th floor of city hall. I like the buildings more than the view. This is a hipstamatic, bumped up in iPhoto. For some reason, I always hear the music from The Odd Couple when I walk by this, or when I am here. 70s brutalist, perhaps?

Early walk, just after 8. I was hoping to see/hear some of the millions of birds which are supposed to travel through the Toronto region today. The wetlands in the park were a riot of birdsong. I saw Redwing Blackbirds, heard Orioles, saw goslings (local), and came across a spectacular Woodpecker (don't know which kind) as I walked along the pond. Lovely.

While I've no idea what these are like inside, this condo project's perhaps the boldest architectural effort I've seen in Toronto in many years. Ups to the architects!
