Took advantage of a house full of women and children this morning to get out in the rare spot of sun. I sat down for a while to try and capture a wren that was nearby, when two Green Woodpeckers came to say hello.

For once I was almost perfectly positioned to take advantage of the good light.

Another one from my walk yesterday. I didn't see this one right until the last second when it flew from it's perch in a tree - so had to crack off a few quick shots - so not as well exposed as the others.

Week 14/52
Back lighting

Spring has (finally) sprung! A walk with my girls over to the woods today in the first spring sunshine of the year provided a perfect opportunity for back-lit subjects.

I'm really hoping that Spring is here for good now - being that Wildlife, namely birds are my favoured subject - there's so much activity and growth to squeeze in over the coming months. It's been a long time coming.

As seen in this photo, the first green shoots of the year are beginning to show - soon we will be surrounded by colour!

My dad has recently purchased the Canon 100-400 IS USM f4.5-5.6 Lens that we hired out a while back, so I've got the fortune of being able to give it a go.

I've not seen a Redpoll before - so nice to have a few feeding today, despite the miserable weather. Having had a look, I have a feeling they were Mealy Repolls as opposed to Lesser Redpoll, but I may be wrong, so any thoughts would be welcomed!

Week 3/52
B&W in Colour

This week's subject was to photograph a B&W subject, but taken in colour - i.e. not converted to B&W. This proved quite difficult, but was made easier by the snow we've had - and it forced me to do some experimenting post processing - which is an area I need to develop.

This area looks distinctly plain normally, but with a bit of snow, hard frost, broken cloud and a low winter sun - it's transformed.

Mistle Thrush Pair

This pair of, what I think are Mistle Thrush, were digging around in a patch of defrosted mud.

I've gone with Mistle Thrush over Song Thrush due to their size...although I was put off by those arrow shaped markings...I'm sure someone will confirm/correct.

Took a walk out towards Weston this morning and there was plenty to see.

I was following a small flock of Yellowhammer down a hedgerow for a while and was eventually able to get close enough for a usable shot.
