OK, so this one does look a little naff, but it's friendly and cheap and the coffee is good. Very welcome as I'd walked over the rather steep cliff path from Benllech Bay in the sun.

Don't worry, I survived, it rained on the way back.

If you have no idea where I am, I've placed this one on the map.

St. Mary the Virgin, Stopham

This is a Norman church in the hamlet of Stopham, near Pulborough, West Sussex (see map).

This church is absolutely pristine inside and this treatment makes it all look a bit faded and grubby - which, I should point out, is not really the case. I think it makes it look a bit more interesting, however!

There are ancient brasses but these are concealed beneath a protective carpet. Impressive flowers in the chancel by Lady Fiona Barttelot, whose family has owned the local estate since 1379.

Not very bright in there, the Gorillapod came in very handy to clamp on top of a pew end.
Don't worry, I remembered to turn out the lights before leaving.

By my reckoning, today (1st March) is the first day of Spring.

Great Dixter was open at the weekend and the crocus (I'm avoiding 'crocuses' and 'croci' !) were properly out, which is an improvement on the last couple of years.

For anyone keen and within reach, it's also open next weekend. For the avid horticulturalist, they have an excellent nursery; plenty of things you won't find in your local garden centre.

Actually, for anyone planning a day out, this is just a few minutes away and also open.

Very unprepossessing from the outside, looking a bit like a pebble-dashed shed, this is apparently the smallest church in the country. I know I've been in smaller, but I'll concede that they were probably officially 'chapels'.

The roof timbers are reputed to incoroprate beams from Viking longships, and the name comes from an early Viking Christian, named to commemorate the Viking settlers in the area.

It's also Earth Day in the US - which, although it tends to go largely unremarked in these parts, is a worthy endeavour.

A very unusual virtually unaltered Norman church (early 12th Century) which still has the round apse at the East end. Normally this has been replaced by a rectangular chancel. It's been like this for 900 years. This is in Winterborne Tomson, near Anderson just off the A31 at Red Post in Dorset. Well worth locating if you're passing (see map).

The oak box pews and fittings are early 18th century.

I'm going to use this as my 52 Themes 2009 Religious theme photo because it's the oldest and simplest and most unaltered religious place I could find this week and, as such, had a certain honest, rustic charm, I felt (even to an old atheist such as myself!).

No cricket today

Quite an interesting image, I think, as it seems to be in two very distinct bands.

Across the bottom we have the clubhouse and grounds at the Spen Cama Memorial Ground of the Preston Nomads Cricket Club, Clappers Lane, Fulking (splendid address), which looks quite green and pleasant. Across the top you can see out past Steyning to Chanctonbury Ring on the hill, which looks decidedly more wintry.

We've had a bit more snow to end the week and lend this alpine aspect to the Sussex Downs. This was taken from near the layby at Saddlescombe which affords particularly good views along the Devil's Dyke ditch and along behind the Downs.

I passed Ken, touchingthelight on the road whilst driving up to get this shot, so I'm wondering if he was out on a photographic foray as well ...

Just North of Henfield, West Sussex, England, on a particularly cold January morning. Freezing fog for a couple of days has produced a very good hoar frost on all the trees.
Not a very colourful shot, and it's maybe a bit flat, but I liked the pastel tones. It was dull and foggy, after all ...

I had been meaning to have another go at this scene, and the sky looked OK today, so I braved the mud and got down a bit lower this time, which I think is more dramatic than my previous effort.

The newly restored wooden toll bridge over the River Adur can be seen in the distance, with Lancing College Chapel on the hill behind. I've placed the photo on the map.

Great to get out and actually have some proper light for a change.

The afternoon of Remembrance Sunday at the war memorial at Stopham, West Sussex.

For the curious, I've done HDR from 7 files then some selective colour. I had to paste in the fluttering flag from one of the originals to get it sharp. The mono conversion is mostly red channel, then some green but not much blue (to heighten the contrast).

I was a few minutes this morning thinking of where I could find the nicest war memorial, and I went for this one. It would have been more poignant had the flag been at half mast, but it seemed a bit cheeky to move it (in Photoshop, I mean!), so I left it as found.

All Saints Church, Buncton 4

An isolated little Norman church, reached by a path through some woods and across a stream. There are seemingly random bits of arch built into the walls (and some wonderful ones outside), believed to be re-used stone from earlier buildings. There are also Roman tiles randomly incorporated into the walls.

This is the view from a pew, just behind the door. There is a good chancel arch and some interesting roof beams above.
