Heavy rain put our avalanche crews to work and Snoqualmie Pass was closed for about 12 hours on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012. This is the view looking down on Franklin Falls and the snow packed Snoqualmie River from I-90.

Once the snow melts, there's a great hike over an old wagon road to the bottom of the falls. www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/franklin-falls

Heavy rain put avalanche crews to work. Snoqualmie pass was closed for about 12 hours on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012. The old snowshed wall stops the avalanche from reaching the road.

Setting Bridge Girders on I-90

Crews are setting girders for the expanded bridges at Gold Creek just east of Snoqualmie Pass.

The eastbound bridges are scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.

Rockfall on I-90 west of snowshed

Rocks fell just west of the snowshed the evening of March 22, 2011 on I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass. The fencing along the hillside caught the rocks, and no one was injured. One rock measured 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide.

The avalanche control crews use pedal-power to push explosives uphill near the summit at Snoqualmie Pass.

This unique method for setting off avalanches is a ‘bomb tram’. Inside the brown, tarp-looking huts on top of the signs near the summit are contraptions that look like exercise bikes with a cable pulley system connected to the pedals. Crews suspend explosives from the cable pulley system and pedal until the explosives reach the top. They release the explosives and bring the snow down the mountain.
