Timing was important for this clean up. As you can see, snow had already start to settle, with the upcoming storm expected that evening, crews need to get the panel out of the way to avoid creating a road hazard for drivers.

Cracks and fractures come with the territory when it comes to steel structures and the 1950s Tacoma Narrows Bridge is no exception. A dedicated crew that serves the bridge has been monitoring this fracture for a long time. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, crews determined too much change occurred in relation to the crack and closed two lanes at noon to get it fixed.

SR 509 - Getting Ready for New Girders

New girders for the bridge were fabricated at Tacoma's Concrete Technology Corporation.

Specially-made 900 lb. steel brackets will support the new girders until they are permanently joined to the bridge by means of a “closure pour.” A closure pour is a concrete pour that joins two separate pieces, making them one unit.

In this case, the closure pour connects each end of each new girder to the existing bridge structure. Steel rebar dowels installed on the bridge after the damaged girders were removed and steel rebar extending from the new girders will give the concrete closure pour strength and stability. The end result is the new girders become part of the larger bridge structure.

Once the girders are placed and the closure pour is done, crews will begin construction of the bridge deck.

Crews are repairing damage to the State Route 509 Puyallup River Bridge sustained in a December 2002 rail-car fire. The blaze damaged two bridge columns and a total of 15 girders. To keep traffic moving, crews are repairing one half of the damaged span at a time, reducing a one-mile stretch of the four-lane bridge between Tacoma and Fife to two lanes with one lane of traffic in each direction.
